KMT Ends 24-Year Hiatus in Donggang Mayoral Race, Blue-White Coalition Endorses Hung Chih-ming

PINGTUNG, May 12 (CNA reporter Huang Yu-ching) – The Kuomintang (KMT) has nominated former township representative Hung Chih-ming to run for Donggang Township mayor in Pingtung County, ending the KMT's 24-year absence from the Donggang mayoral race. He has also received support from the Taiwan People's Party (TPP). KMT Pingtung County Party Chairman Su Ching-chuan stood on stage today, emphasizing the 'blue-white coalition' and stating that the KMT will continue to support TPP candidates in the future.

KMT Pingtung County Party Chairman Su Ching-chuan, accompanied by Pingtung County Council Speaker Chou Tien-lun, announced today the nomination and recommendation of Hung Chih-ming for Donggang Township mayor. TPP Pingtung County Party Chairman Lin Yu-hsien also attended to show support.

Su Ching-chuan told the media that the KMT has not nominated a candidate for Donggang Township mayor for 24 years. This time, Hung Chih-ming was recommended due to his long-term efforts in the local community, which are widely recognized. Hung's candidacy has received TPP support, and the party central committee has set the tone for a 'blue-white coalition,' which has already seen good cooperation in several cities and counties, with Pingtung just beginning. As the number of TPP nominees increases, the KMT will continue to support and promote them, allowing 'white camp' candidates to serve together.

Lin Yu-hsien stated that Hung Chih-ming has a good relationship with the TPP. TPP founder Ko Wen-je and current chairman Huang Kuo-chang both support Hung Chih-ming's candidacy. Ko Wen-je received 5,904 votes in Donggang Township during the 2024 presidential election, with a vote share of 21.88%. The TPP will fully mobilize its supporters to back Hung Chih-ming.

Hung Chih-ming stated that Donggang possesses nationally renowned fishing port resources and marine tourism conditions, but faces challenges such as population outflow, industrial transformation, traffic congestion, insufficient parking, and extreme climate disaster prevention. In the future, he will focus on 'boosting the economy, caring for livelihoods, ensuring safety, and cultivating talent' as his core governance principles, aiming to build a more competitive and happier Donggang.

Hung Chih-ming served two terms as a Donggang township representative and ran for county councilor once, but was unsuccessful. Local sources indicate that the incumbent Donggang Township mayor, Huang Chen-hsiang, won over 60% of the votes in the last election, is independent with a pan-green leaning, and has close interactions with the Pingtung County Government and control over administrative resources. However, with Hung Chih-ming donning the 'blue camp' battle robe and the implicit support of the 'white camp,' the 'white camp's' hidden supporters should not be underestimated.
