(Central News Agency reporter Hsieh Chun-Lin, Taipei, 12th) The Taipei District Court, in its trial of the Jingshe murder case in Taipei City, today sentenced renowned writer Wang Yun (real name: Wang Jiang-Zhen) to 12 years in prison for causing death by injury. The collegiate panel determined that the actions of Wang Yun and others had a significant causal relationship with the death of Ms. Cai, and all should be held responsible for the aggravated outcome of Ms. Cai's death.
In addition, followers Gan Zi-Yun, Liang Bi-Yin, You Xiu-Ling, Jiang Peng-Yu, and Wu Hui-Zhu were each sentenced to 10 years in prison for jointly causing death by injury; Li Yuan-Yuan was sentenced to 9 years for jointly causing death by injury; Lu Li-Fang was sentenced to 5 years for aiding and abetting causing death by injury; Huang Wen-Qi and Li Chen-Yu were each sentenced to 4 years for aiding and abetting causing death by injury; Wu Bang-Dan was sentenced to 1 year and 6 months for aiding and abetting injury.
The Taipei District Court judgment pointed out that Wang Jiang-Zhen established Buddhist lectures and courses 30 years ago and formed a religious group. Followers regarded Wang as a spiritual mentor, respectfully calling him "Rinpoche," "Guru," or "Lineage Holder," and highly obeyed his instructions. If followers were deemed to have made mistakes in handling dharma affairs, or had moral character, personality flaws, a "discussion" would be initiated, where they would be surrounded, accused, insulted by multiple people, and even subjected to physical contact and coercive actions.
According to the judgment, Wang Jiang-Zhen initiated a "discussion" because he believed the victim, Ms. Cai, had neglected her duties regarding the marital property distribution lawsuit and had received reports from other followers that Ms. Cai had a bad temper, emotional issues, poor attitude, and was not diligent in performing dharma affairs. Even after Ms. Cai expressed remorse, recited texts, knelt and kowtowed to the abbess Wu Hui-Zhu, and shaved her head to become a nun, Wang Jiang-Zhen still deemed it insufficient and scheduled a "discussion" with Ms. Cai at Shuiyue Caotang on the evening of July 23, 113th year of the Republic of China (2024).
The judgment stated that followers Jiang Peng-Yu, Liang Bi-Yin, Gan Zi-Yun, You Xiu-Ling, and Wu Hui-Zhu were successively notified to attend. During the process, they stood around Ms. Cai, and Wang Jiang-Zhen instructed Ms. Cai to kneel and apologize to the Buddhas. Jiang and others repeatedly forced Ms. Cai to kneel and kowtow by pulling, supporting, pressing, and kicking her. Ms. Cai hit the floor in multiple places, became physically exhausted, and collapsed. Wu Hui-Zhu even pulled Ms. Cai's collar and dragged her, then intentionally let go, causing Ms. Cai to hit the floor.
According to the judgment, other attendees, including Lu Li-Fang, Li Chen-Yu, Huang Wen-Qi, Wu Bang-Dan, Li Wei (formerly Li Yi-Wei), Jian Yu-Jia, and Li Yuan-Yuan, either watched, echoed, or guarded the main entrance.
The judgment pointed out that after Ms. Cai was hit and beaten, she felt unwell and could not stand on her own, collapsing on the ground. Wang Jiang-Zhen and others left the scene. Afterwards, Li Yuan-Yuan dragged Ms. Cai out of Shuiyue Caotang and threw her onto the road, then dragged her by one hand to a wooden pallet. During this process, Wu Hui-Zhu punched Ms. Cai's head and face, Jiang Peng-Yu poked Ms. Cai's body with an umbrella and kicked her feet, while Lu Li-Fang and Wu Bang-Dan watched, or assisted Li and others in their acts of injury and coercion.
According to the judgment, Li Yuan-Yuan and others fixed Ms. Cai to a cart with tape and pushed her back to the Jingshe. The next day, at around 3 AM, they found Ms. Cai unconscious but did not assist in sending her to the hospital or calling an ambulance. Instead, they first informed Wang Jiang-Zhen, then notified a follower with medical qualifications to assist, which was ineffective. They then immediately formed a group to discuss how to fabricate a cause of death for Ms. Cai to the police and prosecutors, such as her own poor health, delaying until around 10 AM to call an ambulance. However, Ms. Cai showed no signs of life and was not transported.
The judgment pointed out that Ms. Cai suffered multiple bruises all over her body during the "discussion" process due to pulling, supporting, pressing, kicking, pushing, dragging, and beating, leading to rhabdomyolysis, combined with mild axonal nerve damage, resulting in death.
The collegiate panel considered that all defendants denied their involvement, but based on their statements, witness testimonies, surveillance footage, forensic pathologist's appraisal, and mobile phone chat records, the defendants' actions were sufficiently proven.
The judgment pointed out that Wang Jiang-Zhen, Gan Zi-Yun, Liang Bi-Yin, You Xiu-Ling, Jiang Peng-Yu, Wu Hui-Zhu, and Li Yuan-Yuan are all highly educated and intelligent individuals who could foresee that Ms. Cai would die from severe injuries after being repeatedly hit and beaten, yet they negligently left or failed to assist the victim in seeking medical attention. Their actions had a significant causal relationship with Ms. Cai's death, and all should be held responsible for the aggravated outcome of Ms. Cai's death.
Furthermore, the prosecution's indictment alleged that Wang Jiang-Zhen and others' actions, including shaving Ms. Cai's head, ordering her to perform 400 to 500 prostrations daily, and forcing her to jump and touch lights, constituted the crime of coercion under the Criminal Code. However, due to insufficient evidence, no separate acquittal was issued.
Regarding sentencing, the collegiate panel considered that Wang Jiang-Zhen was revered as a god by all followers, yet he gathered people to conduct "discussions" through coercive and injurious means, during which he was responsible for giving instructions and orders, and then left the scene, leading to the severe outcome of Ms. Cai's death. Furthermore, after the crime, he conspired to destroy evidence and only admitted to relevant actions during court proceedings. He reached a settlement with Ms. Cai's family and fulfilled the compensation amount, but failed to provide a confession detailing the facts of the incident as per the settlement agreement, thus he was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
As for Li Wei, after appearing in court, he honestly recounted what he witnessed that day. He and Jian Yu-Jia reached a settlement with Ms. Cai's family and fulfilled the settlement agreement. The complainants and participants all stated in court that they agreed to forgive Li Wei and his wife, and agreed to a lighter sentence and probation. They were sentenced to 1 year and 10 months and 1 year and 8 months respectively, both with 5 years of probation.
The collegiate panel also considered the post-offense attitude of the other defendants, including whether they participated in the conspiracy group to obstruct judicial investigation, and whether they reached a settlement with Ms. Cai's family, and sentenced them accordingly. This case can be appealed. (Editor: Li Heng-Shan) 1150512
