(Central News Agency, Tehran, May 12, Comprehensive Foreign Report) Iranian media reported today that Iran's Revolutionary Guard has once again announced an expansion of the defined scope of the Strait of Hormuz. Stretching from Jask in the east to Siri Island in the west, it covers a length of over 300 kilometers, significantly larger than its pre-war scope.

Reuters reported that this is the second time the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy has announced an expansion of the defined scope of the Strait of Hormuz since the US and Israeli bombing on February 28 sparked conflict.

According to the map it released earlier this month on the 4th, the newly claimed control area of the Strait of Hormuz includes a significant section of the Gulf of Oman coastline belonging to the United Arab Emirates.

At that time, the new scope extended from the line connecting Iran's Mount Mobarak and the UAE's Fujairah in the east, to the line connecting the western end of Iran's Qeshm Island and the UAE's Umm al Quwain in the west. Now, the scope appears to have further expanded.

Iran's Fars News Agency reported today that Mohammad Akbarzadeh, Deputy Director of the Political Department of the IRGC Navy, stated that Iran has expanded the definition of the Strait of Hormuz into a "vast operational area," no longer considering it a narrow waterway surrounding a few islands, but an area with significantly increased scope and military importance.

He said: "In the past, the scope of the Strait of Hormuz was defined as a limited area around islands such as Hormuz Island and Hengam Island. This view has now changed." Iran now defines the Strait of Hormuz as a strategic area stretching from Jask in the east to Siri Island in the west.

Fars News Agency and another Iranian news agency, Tasnim News Agency, also reported today that the regional scope of the Strait of Hormuz has expanded from an estimated 20 to 30 miles (approximately 32 to 48 kilometers) in the past to 200 to 300 miles (approximately 320 to 480 kilometers).

Tasnim News Agency also emphasized that the new strait scope forms a "complete crescent shape." (Compiled by: Chang Cheng-chien) 1150512
