(Hualien, May 12, Central News Agency reporter Li Hsien-feng) As the Hualien-Taitung Railway celebrates its centennial, renovated stations have incorporated important local elements into their designs. For instance, Fuli Station, designed with the 'Granary of the Earth' concept, has won an award. Fuli Township Mayor Chiang Tung-cheng hopes the station will not only be a transit point for travelers but also a window for promoting agricultural products and slow-living culture.

To celebrate the Hualien-Taitung Railway's centennial, various stations along the line have distinctive features. The Hakka Affairs Council will host the 'Hualien-Taitung Railway Centennial – Definitely Hakka Special Exhibition,' with an opening ceremony on May 16 at Yuli Township Civic Plaza in Hualien.

Fuli Township, located at the southernmost tip of Hualien, has a railway station that serves as a vital transportation hub for residents. Since its opening in 1926, for a hundred years, the whistle sounds on its platforms have welcomed and sent off countless students from afar and returning wanderers. The rhythm interwoven by the railway tracks and the land has long become the deepest collective memory in the hearts of Fuli residents.

Former stationmaster Chen Chih-hsien returned to the platform, recalling the changes of this cross-temporal railway, feeling deeply moved. He stated that Fuli Station, from its wooden station house filled with the aroma of cypress during the Japanese colonial era, to the coal smoke slowly emitted by steam locomotives, carried the hard work and dreams of the older generation. During the Republic of China era, it entered the golden age of blue-skin trains, and the platforms were packed with Fuli rice awaiting transport.

Today, the station has shed its old shell and been reinterpreted with the 'Granary of the Earth' as its inspiration, incorporating the local rice paddies landscape. It embodies the station's transformation from agricultural development to tourism.

Fuli Station also won the silver award in the transportation category of the Hong Kong Institute of Architects' 'Architecture Design Awards for Cross-Strait and Four Regions' in 2017 (the gold award was vacant, making it the highest honor).

Chiang Tung-cheng said that Fuli Railway Station, this century-old 'Granary of the Earth,' is not only a transportation gateway but also a highlight for Fuli to go international. The underground corridor within the station has now transformed into an artistic and cultural corridor showcasing the 'Beauty of Fuli,' with scattered photographic masterpieces on its walls, condensing Fuli's golden daylily fields, lush green rice waves, and local cultural charm.

Chiang Tung-cheng invites the public to visit Fuli during the Hualien-Taitung Railway's centennial to experience this railway landmark that blends historical vicissitudes with modern aesthetics, and together witness the prosperous start of the next century. (Editor: Li Heng-shan) 1150512
