(Central News Agency Port-au-Prince 11th Comprehensive Foreign Report) Haitian Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime stated today in an interview that the current security situation in Haiti has not reached the level required to hold elections in August.

Reuters reported that Haiti, the most populous country in the Caribbean, is awaiting its first presidential election in 10 years. However, in recent years, armed gangs have consolidated their power in the capital and spread to rural and central areas, resulting in thousands of deaths and over a million displaced people. Successive governments have repeatedly used this as a reason to delay elections.

Fils-Aime said in an interview with the editor-in-chief of Haiti's oldest newspaper, "Le Nouvelliste," on Magik9 radio, "The current security conditions (in Haiti) are clearly not at the level required to hold elections in August."

He added, "I hope the elections can be completed by the end of the year," and "On February 7, we will welcome an elected president."

Fils-Aime took over power from the transitional presidential council on February 7 this year, a critical date for Haiti's political transition. However, leaders from all sides often pay lip service to this date to extend their terms.

Haiti's previous president, Jovenel Moise, was assassinated in 2021 after delaying elections. His death created a political vacuum, allowing already powerful gangs to extend their influence to almost the entire capital.

Meanwhile, the United Nations and the United States have also made it clear that providing security force support will depend on whether the Haitian government holds elections.

The Haitian Electoral Council had previously scheduled the first round of voting for August 30, with a run-off in December. More than 280 political parties were approved to participate.

Fils-Aime said, "We are not going to give the public an encyclopedia from which to choose." "Choice is good, but too many choices are not necessarily what is needed. I hope our election will have 10 to 15 presidential candidates."

He stated that the government is negotiating electoral laws with various political parties, but he is not yet satisfied with the election budget proposed by the Electoral Council. (Compiled by: Qu Xiangping) 1150512
