(Central News Agency reporter Wu Hsin-Yun, Taipei 12th) Taiwan's premium cut flower export market is expanding again. The Ministry of Agriculture announced today that Taiwan and New Zealand have signed the 'Export Plan for Fresh Plant Products from Taiwan to New Zealand,' officially allowing Taiwanese orchids and anthurium cut flowers to be exported to New Zealand starting today.
To expand Taiwan's cut flower export market, Taiwan began preparing data on pest management and risk assessment for products such as orchids and anthurium cut flowers in 2022, applying for market quarantine access to New Zealand.
The Ministry of Agriculture issued a press release today stating that after nearly four years of continuous consultations and technical discussions, and supplementing relevant information as requested by New Zealand, both sides signed the 'Export Plan for Fresh Plant Products from Taiwan to New Zealand' today at the Taiwan-New Zealand Economic Cooperation Agreement and the Joint Management Committee Meeting on Food Safety Inspection and Animal and Plant Quarantine Measures. Taiwanese orchids and anthurium cut flowers are now officially approved for export to New Zealand.
According to the plan, orchids and anthurium cut flowers exported to New Zealand must adopt systemic management measures for specific thrips and bacterial wilt, including using clean growing media, disease-free seedlings, hanging yellow sticky traps, and pest control measures. Records of production, harvesting, and transportation processes must be maintained for traceability. Additionally, producers and exporters must undergo educational training before each annual export season to ensure the implementation of the export plan.
Furthermore, exports must undergo quarantine inspection by the Bureau of Animal and Plant Health Inspection and Quarantine to ensure the products comply with New Zealand's regulations and are free from pests of concern to New Zealand.
The Ministry of Agriculture stated that through continuous quarantine consultations in recent years, it has successfully facilitated market access for various products, including Oncidium cut flowers, mangoes, lychees, fresh pineapples, bird's nest ferns, and Monstera deliciosa leaves. It continues to assist exporting farmers and businesses in expanding sales channels and establishing stable trade cooperation. With the approval for orchids and anthurium cut flowers, Taiwan's flower industry will further enhance its international competitiveness.
According to statistics, the export value of Taiwanese orchids last year was nearly US$150 million, with major export countries including Japan, Australia, and the United States. The export value of anthuriums was approximately US$4.5 million, mainly exported to Japan, Australia, and Singapore. (Editor: Long Po-An) 1150512
