(Central News Agency reporter Wang Yang-yu, Taipei, May 12) The Legislative Yuan passed the third reading of the National Defense Special Act on the 8th. Public attention has focused on whether the Executive Yuan will introduce another special act or supplementary budget for items such as drones, which were excluded from the military procurement act. Premier Cho Jung-tai said today that all three pieces of the military procurement puzzle cannot be missing, and the government will seek the most favorable path under the provisions of the constitution and budget law to quickly satisfy the autonomous development of the domestic military industry.

With the numerical advantage of the Blue and White camps, the Legislative Yuan passed the third reading of the National Defense Special Act on the 8th, allocating a maximum of NT$780 billion, but excluding commercial purchases and commissioned manufacturing projects.

This morning, the Legislative Yuan continued its general interpellation session. Premier Cho Jung-tai was interviewed by the media before the session. He provided explanations regarding whether the US President Trump's statement about discussing arms sales to Taiwan with Chinese President Xi Jinping would change the US's stance on arms sales to Taiwan, and what compensatory measures for military procurement, such as another special act or supplementary budget, would be taken.

Cho Jung-tai said that Taiwan-US relations have seen very substantial development and progress in recent years, and everyone has successively heard that important national leaders and important national officials from the US have mentioned that they do not wish for or allow unilateral changes to the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. This is currently the most mutually credible relationship between Taiwan and the US, and Taiwan will continue to promote friendship and cooperation between the two sides based on this relationship.

Regarding military procurement, Cho Jung-tai pointed out that he reiterated that all three pieces of the military procurement puzzle cannot be missing: international cooperation cannot be delayed, and the development of the domestic defense-related military industry cannot be abandoned. Under these three principles, the current passage of a part of the National Defense Special Act is not enough to complete all three pieces of the puzzle.

Cho Jung-tai stated that therefore, the government will seek the most favorable path under the spirit of the constitution and the provisions of the budget law, requiring that the content, procedures, and timelines can be prioritized and quickly met to satisfy the autonomous development of the domestic military industry. This is the best way to complete the three pieces of the puzzle. (Editor: Su Lung-chi)1150512
