China says Taiwan's WHA participation must adhere to 'one China' principle; MAC: Impossible to accept

Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) firmly rejected China's assertion that Taiwan's participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA) must adhere to the 'one China' principle. The MAC emphasized that Taiwan is not part of the People's Republic of China and cannot accept participating in international organizations under Beijing's control, similar to Hong Kong.

(Central News Agency reporter Lu Chia-jung, Taipei, 12th) Regarding the statement by China's Taiwan Affairs Office that Taiwan's participation in the World Health Assembly (WHA) must adhere to the '1992 Consensus,' which embodies the 'one China' principle, Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said today that Taiwan has never been part of the People's Republic of China and it is absolutely impossible for Taiwan to accept Beijing as its central government, like Hong Kong, and participate in international organizations under its permission and arrangements.

The 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) is about to take place in Geneva, Switzerland. Due to pressure from China, Taiwan has not yet received a formal invitation.

China's Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua stated yesterday that previously, on the basis of the '1992 Consensus,' which embodies the 'one China' principle, Taiwan participated in the WHA as 'Chinese Taipei' with observer status through cross-strait consultations. This was a special arrangement made through cross-strait consultations on the basis of adhering to the '1992 Consensus,' which embodies the 'one China' principle.

Chen Binhua claimed that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government insists on its 'Taiwan independence' separatist stance and refuses to recognize the '1992 Consensus,' which embodies the 'one China' principle, leading to the non-existence of the political foundation for Taiwan's participation in the WHA.

In response, the MAC stated in a written reply today that Taiwan has never been part of the People's Republic of China and it is absolutely impossible for Taiwan to accept Beijing as its central government, like Hong Kong, and participate in international organizations under its permission and arrangements.

The MAC said that the Republic of China has the legitimate right to participate in the international community, and China's suppression will not change Taiwan's determination to go global and make contributions.

The WHA will begin on the 18th. Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang said on the 11th that although Taiwan has not yet received a formal invitation, Taiwan should not be absent and should actively participate in the face of global challenges such as an aging population, new infectious diseases, and drug resistance. Therefore, he will lead a delegation to Geneva to hold four forums, concretely presenting Taiwan's important role in 'Taiwan can help.' (Editor: Chou Hui-ying) 1150512
