(Central News Agency reporter Chen Chieh-ling, Taipei, 11th) With the World Health Assembly approaching, the WHA action group is set to depart. Minister of Health and Welfare Shih Chung-liang said today that this year, the "Taiwan Smart Medical and Health Exhibition" will be introduced for the first time, hoping to implement "Taiwan Can Help." In addition, they will maintain public health exchanges with the United States to ensure bilateral cooperation.
The 79th World Health Assembly (WHA) will be held in Geneva, Switzerland, on May 18. Legislator Wang Cheng-hsu of the Democratic Progressive Party today, in the Legislative Yuan's Social Welfare and Environmental Hygiene Committee, inquired about the Ministry of Health and Welfare's plans to participate in WHA sideline events and conduct international dialogues. He reminded that WHA sideline meetings are very important venues for promoting assistance that Taiwan can offer internationally, playing an indispensable role in the global public health system.
Shih Chung-liang stated that this year's WHA action group is cooperating with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to hold four international forums during the sideline events. Topics include medical resilience, smart healthcare, cancer prevention, and hepatitis C prevention, through which Taiwan's experience will be shared with the international community, and experts from various countries will exchange and learn.
Shih Chung-liang said that this year, the "Taiwan Smart Medical and Health Exhibition" will be simultaneously introduced for the first time. This will integrate diplomacy, medical, and economic and trade fields, bringing relevant medical systems and industry players to Geneva to ensure the spirit of "Taiwan Can Help" is seen and even truly implemented during the period when heads of important international health organizations gather. This is also what differentiates this year from previous years.
In addition, Wang Cheng-hsu pointed out that the United States, due to the unsatisfactory epidemic prevention performance of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the organization's excessive influence by other countries, has withdrawn from the WHO. The United States will be more inclined to promote global health security through bilateral, results-oriented approaches, which also gives Taiwan more room to establish bilateral cooperation with the United States. Academic cooperation between Taiwan and the United States needs to seek better breakthroughs.
Regarding the United States' clear statement this year that it will not participate in the WHA, Shih Chung-liang believes it is a great pity because the WHA is still an important platform for global public health, and Taiwan cannot be absent.
Shih Chung-liang pointed out that Taiwan and the United States already have a memorandum of cooperation in public health and medical fields, and negotiations for renewal are currently underway. Taiwan annually invites active US health officials to Taiwan to participate in the Health and Welfare Forum, with a forum to be held in June this year, and a roundtable forum for US state health officials to be held in August. Through substantive exchanges and interactions, bilateral cooperation will be further strengthened. (Edited by: Kuan Chung-wei) 1150511
