(Central News Agency reporter Huang Yu-ching, Pingtung County, 11th) The Xinyuan Township Library in Pingtung County officially opened today. The new library is positioned as an "all-ages reading space," also featuring a manga section to cater to the reading needs of different generations, and an outdoor viewing terrace offering westward views of the rice paddies, allowing the fragrance of books to accompany the rippling rice waves.
The Pingtung County Government Cultural Affairs Department today issued a press release stating that the new Xinyuan Township Library is located in the core living area of the township, adjacent to a public parking lot and a children's park site. It is a 4-story independent building, with a total floor area increasing from the original 340 square meters to 900 square meters. The space planning includes age- and group-specific reading areas and a multi-functional audio-visual space. Reading seats have increased from 45 to over 90, and the collection totals approximately 30,000 volumes, covering various types of books to meet the reading needs of different generations.
The Cultural Affairs Department pointed out that the new library is positioned as an "all-ages reading space." In addition to planning tiered and segmented services on floors 1 to 4 to meet the needs of different groups, it also caters to the reading habits of local residents by specifically setting up a "manga section" and a "genre fiction section." The outdoor area on the second floor also features a scenic terrace, offering westward views of the lush green rice paddies, where the fragrance of books and the rippling rice waves accompany each other, allowing residents to relax their minds and immerse themselves in the joy of reading amidst their busy daily lives, shaping a new reading landscape for Xinyuan.
Furthermore, the multi-functional audio-visual room on the third floor features a high-ceiling design, serving as the core base for the library to continuously host reading promotion activities. In the future, it will provide various activities such as artistic and cultural performances for the township, promoting cross-disciplinary dialogue between art and reading.
The Cultural Affairs Department explained that to provide the township residents with a high-quality cultural and educational environment, the Xinyuan Township Office proposed a plan in 2020. County Magistrate Chou Chun-mi, during her tenure as a legislator, assisted in coordinating library funding and site selection. In June 2021, it received a subsidy of NT$44 million from the Ministry of Education's "Public Library Reading Environment Improvement Project." The Xinyuan Township Office self-funded NT$16 million, bringing the total project cost to NT$60 million, with construction commencing in July 2023.
Today's inauguration ceremony was attended by Chou Chun-mi, Xinyuan Township Mayor Fang Kuan-ting, Minister of Education Cheng Ying-yao, Deputy Director of the National Central Library Lai Chung-chin, and other guests, who joined local residents in celebrating this important moment for the library's opening, hoping to continue and deepen Pingtung County's reading power.
