(Central News Agency reporter Yu Xiaohan, Taipei, 11th) Some legislators today pointed out that the number of traffic accident casualties has not met the target of a 5% reduction. Ministry of Transportation officials stated that last year, the number of road accident deaths decreased, and the number of injured people decreased in 15 of 22 counties and cities, not a comprehensive increase. The ministry will provide special guidance to areas where the number of injured has increased, based on the characteristics and causes of injuries.

To shed the notorious label of "pedestrian hell," the Ministry of Transportation has introduced multiple measures and set a target of reducing traffic accident casualties by 5% annually.

The Legislative Yuan's Transportation Committee held its preliminary review of the Ministry of Transportation's budget for the 115th fiscal year this morning. Several legislators proposed that the total number of traffic accident deaths decreased from 3,023 in 2023 to 2,950 in 2024, a decrease of approximately 2.4%, which did not meet the 5% target.

According to the proposal, information from the Ministry of Transportation's Road Safety Mobilization website shows that in the 2025 road traffic accident statistics, the number of accidents, casualties, and child, youth, and elderly casualties increased compared to 2024. The Ministry of Transportation should set quantitative improvement targets. It was resolved to freeze 10% of the budget for transportation planning and industrial development projects, approximately NT$973.14 million, and requested a written report within one month.

In addition, proposals regarding the budget for the Road Safety Information Inquiry website, media policy, and business promotion expenses did not reach a consensus and were reserved for negotiation. For the Intelligent System Development and Construction Plan, due to the lack of detailed explanations regarding the differences between related plans and the reasons for increased expenses, it was resolved to cut NT$6 million.
