Miaoli 70-Year-Old Man Suspected of Drug-Impaired Driving Refused Check, Collided with Police Car, Injuring 2 Officers

The police followed behind, and the two vehicles collided on Yingcai Road in Miaoli City, injuring two officers; the man surnamed Wu was apprehended, and it is not ruled out that he was driving under the influence of drugs.

Miaoli County Police Bureau's Miaoli Precinct stated today that officers on the 10th found a private car illegally driving in a turning lane at the intersection of Weigong Road and Guohua Road in Miaoli City. When they prepared to stop and investigate, the driver suddenly accelerated and drove away. The officers, concerned about endangering other road users, did not recklessly intercept the vehicle, but followed behind and reported for backup.

The police said that the driver surnamed Wu, possibly due to a guilty conscience, drove at high speed to escape, exhibiting dangerous behaviors such as running red lights and swerving through intersections. On Yingcai Road, in an attempt to evade capture, his vehicle suddenly braked sharply and collided with the patrol car. Both vehicles lost control and swerved off the road. The man surnamed Wu was not injured, but the two officers in the patrol car sustained multiple abrasions to their heads and bodies due to the vehicle overturning. They were taken to the hospital for treatment and are not in serious condition.

The police stated that after the incident, both the patrol car officers and the man surnamed Wu underwent alcohol tests, which showed no alcohol. However, the man surnamed Wu has multiple prior drug offenses, and a saliva drug test showed a positive reaction. Whether he was involved in drug-impaired driving still requires further investigation and clarification through urine testing. He has been referred to the Taiwan Miaoli District Prosecutors Office for investigation on suspicion of dangerous driving behavior, public endangerment, and obstruction of official duties.
