(Central News Agency reporter Hsieh Yi-hsuan, Taipei, 11th) Taipower held its handover ceremony for the new and outgoing General Managers today. Former General Manager Wang Yao-ting stepped down, and Kuo Tien-ho took over. Kuo Tien-ho stated that in the future, he will focus on three major key tasks, including stable power supply as the core, planning to successively invest in 13 combined-cycle units within 10 years; secondly, strengthening grid resilience and stabilizing regional power supply; and thirdly, promoting digital transformation, utilizing real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance to improve operational efficiency and power supply quality.
Taipower Company held the handover ceremony for the new and outgoing General Managers this afternoon, with Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Lai Chien-hsin, presiding over the ceremony.
Kuo Tien-ho stated that coming from a grassroots power generation background, returning to the Taipower family, he feels an even greater sense of mission for the future. Coinciding with Taipower's 80th anniversary, President Lai Ching-te expects Taipower to actively promote the second energy transition and strengthen grid resilience.
Kuo Tien-ho further mentioned that Taipower Chairman Tseng Wen-sheng recently pointed out three forces that will affect Taipower's future, including adaptation to climate change and net-zero carbon reduction, power resilience under energy geopolitics, and the power demand of the AI industry. Taipower must ensure diversified power generation, resilient power supply, and social communication.
Kuo Tien-ho stated that he will focus on several key tasks in accordance with President Lai's expectations and the Chairman's instructions. First, stable power supply is the core of the core, and Taipower will continue to advance its own power development, with 13 combined-cycle units expected to be successively put into operation within the next 10 years. Second, grid resilience will continue to move towards the three major directions of decentralization, robustness, and defense, promoting direct power supply from power plants to industrial parks, increasing substation and distribution nodes, thereby strengthening regional power supply. Third, promoting digital transformation, through real-time monitoring, predictive maintenance, and AI assistance, to improve operational efficiency and power supply quality.
Kuo Tien-ho stated that Taipower holds an open attitude towards any option that contributes to net-zero. In addition to rigorously promoting independent nuclear safety inspections, it will also take "nuclear safety first, nuclear waste treatment, and social consensus" as its three major principles. In the future, whether it is existing units, evaluating extended service units, or research on advanced nuclear energy technology, it will cooperate with national policies to ensure stable power supply while taking into account environmental sustainability.
Outgoing General Manager Wang Yao-ting stated that Taipower has faced many attacks and great pressure in the past. Many problems seen from the outside are one-sided, but Taipower solves problems comprehensively. National energy security and industrial power consumption are more important than anything else.
Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Lai Chien-hsin, stated that he recalled working with Wang Yao-ting in the past, and the most impressive memory was when Typhoon Danas caused a large-scale power outage in the south. The Taipower Chairman, General Manager, and frontline employees rushed to the scene immediately to carry out emergency repairs and restoration work. Today, he is very happy to see Wang Yao-ting finally relieved of his heavy responsibilities. Wang Yao-ting graduated from National Cheng Kung University, and Kuo Tien-ho is his junior. The senior passing the baton to the junior will not only be successful but also a "match made in heaven," allowing this legacy to continue.
Taipower Chairman Tseng Wen-sheng stated that in the past, when Taipower units had problems, he and Wang Yao-ting had seen Kuo Tien-ho personally command the power plants, which shows his familiarity with the system. Now, facing challenges including power generation options, grid resilience, and reducing the number of outages, and with many important public utility users potentially experiencing power outages, Wang Yao-ting will be assigned to a full-time position as Chairman of Taiwan Electromechanical Engineering Services Co., Ltd. to assist Taipower in solving new challenges.
Taipower explained that the new General Manager Kuo Tien-ho joined Taipower in 1988, serving as a mechanical engineer at Hsing-Ta Power Plant. During his tenure, he gained experience at other power plants such as Ta-Lin and Ta-Tan. At the end of 2020, he became the Director of the Power Generation Department, managing Taipower's 21 hydro and thermal power plants. On August 1, 2021, he was promoted to Vice President and CEO of the Hydro-Thermal Power Business Division. He retired on July 16, 2025, and returned to Taipower today to assume the position of General Manager. (Editor: Pan Yi-ching) 1150511
