(Central News Agency reporter Wang Chao-yu, Keelung, May 11) The Keelung City Government and the Fisheries Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture have invested over NT$167 million to build the "Badouzi Fish Market". A groundbreaking ceremony was held today, with completion expected by the end of next year. The city government hopes to create a modern and hygienic seafood trading venue through hardware upgrades.
The "Badouzi Fish Market New Construction Project" is located within the weighbridge station next to the Keelung District Fishermen's Association. The base area is approximately 8,000 square meters, with a total construction floor area of about 4,000 square meters. It plans to build a U-shaped fish unloading shed, about 6 meters high, with an exterior painted with weather-resistant coatings.
Keelung City Government Deputy Mayor Fang Ding-an attended the ceremony today and stated that Keelung City's fishery production last year was nearly 50,000 metric tons, with a production value of approximately NT$2.425 billion. Of this, Badouzi Fishing Port accounted for about 80% of the city's total, playing a key role in fishery development. He expects that after the new fish market is completed, it will provide a safer, more hygienic, and convenient trading environment, ensuring the quality of fishery products.
Fang Ding-an pointed out that he is grateful for the long-term support of the Fisheries Agency for Keelung's fishery construction. This new construction project is not just a hardware construction but also an important foundation for improving fishermen's working conditions, enhancing the hygienic safety of aquatic products, and promoting the upgrading of Keelung's fishing industry.
Fisheries Agency Deputy Director-General Miao Tzu-chang stated that Badouzi Fishing Port is the largest fishing base in northern Taiwan, famous for mackerel, scad, small squid, and cardinal prawns. After the project is completed, it will provide a shaded and comfortable working environment, preventing exposure of seafood to maintain freshness, thereby improving quality from the source. Jian Jian-hui, Director of the Keelung District Fishermen's Association, also thanked the city government and the Fisheries Agency for their support, looking forward to the smooth completion of the project and driving the development of Keelung's fishing industry.
Tsai Fu-ning, Director of the Keelung City Government Department of Industrial Development, said that Badouzi is not only a major fishing center but also an important node for marine tourism. In the future, it will connect resources such as Heping Island, the yacht harbor, and Chaojing Park to form a complete marine corridor. The city government has also applied to the Fisheries Agency for the construction of a breakwater, which, upon completion, will not only improve the tranquility within the harbor but also increase berthing space for vessels.
