(Central News Agency reporter Huang Kuo-feng, Chiayi County, 11th) According to statistics from the Chiayi County Government Education Department, the actual number of first-grade elementary school new student registrations this year decreased by 133 compared to last year. Four schools had no new student registrations, and in addition to the declining birthrate, transportation issues are also a factor; the Education Department stated that there are no plans for school mergers or closures this year.

The Education Department today issued a press release stating that the registration for elementary school new students for this year ended at the end of April. According to statistics, there are 2,321 first-grade new students for the 115 academic year, a decrease of approximately 5.42% compared to the 114 academic year.

The Education Department said that the schools with no new student registrations this year are Zhuyuan Elementary School, Renhe Elementary School, Shakeng Elementary School, and Chashan Elementary School, among which Zhuyuan Elementary School has had no new students for two consecutive years.

The Education Department stated that schools with only one new student registration include Guolu Elementary School, Xiaji Elementary School, Ruili Elementary School, Longgang Elementary School, Yong'an Elementary School, Nanxing Elementary School, Dayou Elementary School, Fengshan Experimental Education School Elementary Section, Jingshan Elementary School Zhenliao Branch, and Suantou Elementary School Tanqian Branch.

The Education Department said that schools with a total of 10 students or fewer include Zhuyuan Elementary School, Renhe Elementary School, Renhe Elementary School Taihe Branch, Minhe Elementary School Dahu Branch, and Fengshan Experimental Education School, while there are 25 schools with 20 students or fewer.

Yan Ting-yu, Deputy Director of the Education Department, told the Central News Agency that for schools with fewer than 10 students, informational meetings are continuously held, and local residents hope they can be preserved. However, the number of students continues to decrease due to the declining birthrate and transportation issues. Moreover, if schools are located in remote areas, most young people work elsewhere. Currently, the department is evaluating school transformation to cope. (Editor: Li Ming-zong) 1150511
