Washington, May 10 (CNA) — As US President Donald Trump actively seeks an agreement to end the Middle East war, a senior government official today stated that Trump is preparing to once again pressure Chinese President Xi Jinping on the Iran issue during his visit to Beijing in the coming days.
According to Agence France-Presse, citing White House sources, issues such as trade, tariffs, and artificial intelligence (AI) will be key focuses of Trump's Beijing trip from May 13 to 15. He is also scheduled to visit the Temple of Heaven.
The official stated in a telephone briefing, "I expect the president will exert pressure on the Iran issue," adding that Trump has repeatedly expressed his position on this matter during past calls with Xi Jinping.
The official noted that Trump has frequently mentioned to Xi Jinping the revenue China derives from purchasing oil from Iran and Russia, as well as the sale of dual-use goods.
"I expect the relevant discussions to continue," the official said.
The official also mentioned that US sanctions recently imposed on China regarding the Iran war might also be raised during the talks.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly told reporters that Trump will arrive in Beijing on the evening of May 13. This visit, originally scheduled for March, was postponed due to the outbreak of the Iran war.
Kelly indicated that a welcoming ceremony and bilateral talks with Xi Jinping will take place on the morning of May 14, followed by Trump's visit to the Temple of Heaven in the afternoon and a state dinner in the evening.
On May 15, Trump will also hold a bilateral tea session and working lunch with Xi Jinping before returning to Washington.
Kelly stated that the focus of the trip is to "adjust the relationship with China, prioritize reciprocity and fairness, to restore US economic autonomy."
The two heads of state agreed to a one-year trade truce last October, but Trump's comprehensive tariff measures continue to cause high tensions. The US and China will also discuss extending the trade truce.
According to Reuters, a senior US official told reporters today that the rare earths agreement between the US and China remains valid and its extension will be announced at an appropriate time.
"The agreement is still valid and has not yet expired," the official told reporters, adding that both sides are still in ongoing dialogue, but it is currently uncertain whether the agreement will be extended. (Translation: Ho Hung-ju) 1150511
