(Central News Agency reporter Yang Shu-min, Taipei, 10th) The Taipei City Government announced today that following online rumors of a rat falling from the ceiling in a department store food court, an inspection was conducted at Eslite Spectrum Nanxi Store on the evening of the 10th. The operator has been instructed to strengthen equipment cleaning and maintenance, prevent the emission of cooking fumes and odors, and implement thorough environmental management to prevent rodent infestation.

The Taipei City Government stated that in response to online rumors of a rat falling from the ceiling in a department store food court, the Environmental Protection Department, Health Department, and Department of Commerce conducted a joint inter-agency inspection at Eslite Spectrum Nanxi Store on the evening of the 10th.

The Taipei City Government explained that the Environmental Protection Department's inspection items included air pollution control equipment, grease traps, food waste and garbage collection and transportation, and garbage storage areas. The inspection found that some cooking fumes were still escaping from the electrostatic precipitator in the air pollution control equipment. The operator was immediately required to strengthen equipment cleaning, maintenance, and improve treatment efficiency, and to regularly clean electrode plates, collection plates, and internal filters to prevent reduced efficiency due to grease accumulation.

The Environmental Protection Department reminded businesses that equipment repair or renewal should be carried out when necessary to effectively reduce the emission of cooking fumes and odors. All grease traps should be regularly maintained, and food waste and garbage collection and storage must be covered. Through good environmental management, rodent infestation can be prevented at the source.

The Taipei City Government added that the Health Department strengthened publicity on rodent prevention measures for 28 food businesses, including catering operators and vendors in the food court, guiding them to implement environmental cleaning, food protection, and pest control management measures.

The Health Department also reminded businesses of the 'three no' strategies for rodent prevention: 'no entry for rats - seal off rat pathways, no dwelling for rats - tidy up the environment, no food for rats - cut off food sources.' This includes repairing screens and doors, sealing rat holes and crevices; regularly tidying environments such as kitchens, warehouses, and storage rooms; promptly cleaning tableware and kitchen utensils after use; and storing drinking water, food, food waste, or animal feed in sealed containers.

The Taipei City Government further stated that the Department of Commerce inspected the department store operator's self-cleaning and disinfection records, and the usage of garbage bins and food waste bins. The operator has been conducting monthly self-cleaning and disinfection for rodents since January 115 (2026), and both food waste bins and garbage bins are covered. The operator has been advised on-site to continue strengthening environmental hygiene management. (Editor: He Hong-ru) 1150511
