(Central News Agency reporter Wang Hung-kuo, New Taipei, May 10) An industrial safety accident occurred in Yonghe District, New Taipei City this morning. A 31-year-old Indonesian migrant worker, surnamed Mu, was performing water pipe improvement work under the Fuhe Bridge when he allegedly accidentally fell from a height of 10 meters. Despite emergency medical treatment, he was declared dead.
The New Taipei City Labor Inspection Office stated that after receiving the report this morning, it immediately dispatched personnel to conduct an inspection. Preliminary investigations showed that when the Indonesian migrant worker, surnamed Mu (phonetic translation), was working on the culvert, there were no fall prevention facilities at the site, causing Mr. Mu to fall about 10 meters to the ground. He was pronounced dead after being sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.
The Labor Inspection Office stated that it has ordered the cessation of work at the site, and that no workers may engage in related work until the improvement plan has been approved. In addition, the Labor Inspection Office preliminarily judged that the employer was negligent, and if confirmed in the future, the case will be referred to the District Prosecutor's Office for investigation.
The Labor Inspection Office stated that if the case is eventually ruled non-prosecution, deferred prosecution, acquittal, or probation by the prosecutor, a fine ranging from NT$30,000 to NT$300,000 will be imposed in accordance with the Occupational Safety and Health Act. To protect the rights and interests of Mr. Mu's family, the Labor Inspection Office will require the employer to pay occupational disaster compensation and assist the family in applying for occupational disaster relief.
