(Central News Agency reporter Lai Yu-chen, Taipei, 9th) According to the Ministry of National Defense's pre-announced "Draft Amendment to the Physical Classification Standards," transgender individuals will be reclassified from exemption from military service to alternative service. The Ministry of Interior has launched measures to strengthen a gender-friendly service environment and supporting facilities. The Ministry of Interior stated today that the Success Ridge Alternative Service Training Center has continuously strengthened individual privacy protection, improved bathroom and toilet partitions, and promoted friendly spaces, hoping to create a friendly service environment.

The Ministry of National Defense, in conjunction with the Ministry of Interior, pre-announced an amendment to the physical classification standards in December last year, reclassifying transgender individuals from exemption from military service to alternative service. However, this was questioned as infringing on human rights. The Ministry of Interior explained that the system has not yet been implemented and is continuously collecting opinions from all sectors and studying amendments, while also continuously strengthening a gender-friendly service environment and supporting facilities.

The Ministry of Interior pointed out today through a press release that the alternative service system not only emphasizes the construction of training and service capabilities but also focuses on the care and respect for the personality of alternative service members during their service period. In recent years, the Ministry of Interior has continuously promoted gender equality education and gradually refined various friendly facilities and care mechanisms, including improving bathroom and toilet partitions, renovating living quarters, strengthening individual privacy protection, and providing appropriate care and assistance according to individual needs, continuously improving the overall quality of service.

To strengthen the physical and mental care of alternative service members, the Ministry of Interior stated that it has established relevant counseling and support mechanisms, including attaching a counseling needs survey form with the conscription order, and actively caring for the physical and mental conditions of each alternative service member by dedicated personnel during the entry medical examination. Through advocacy education, counseling and referral, and medical treatment, a "three-tier prevention and treatment" psychological counseling mechanism has been established to help them adapt smoothly to training and group life. The three tiers of prevention and treatment refer to primary discovery and prevention, secondary counseling and referral, and tertiary medical treatment.

Minister of Interior Liu Shih-fang also inspected relevant friendly measures at the Success Ridge Alternative Service Training Camp yesterday, including improved bathroom and toilet partitions and the promotion of friendly spaces. The Ministry of Interior said that Liu Shih-fang's inspection focused on living facilities such as dormitories, bathrooms, and dining environments, and she also particularly cared about the adaptation to life and the physical and mental conditions of alternative service members during training, reminding training cadres to continuously strengthen care and communication and establish immediate assistance and response mechanisms.

The Ministry of Interior emphasized that it will continue to listen to the opinions of alternative service members and all sectors, review relevant measures, and refine camp space, counseling care, and management mechanisms to create a respectful, diverse, and friendly service environment, allowing alternative service members to serve with peace of mind and gain growth and learning during their service.
