BUDAPEST (Central News Agency) -- Pro-European Union conservative politician Peter Magyar was sworn in today as Hungary's new Prime Minister, officially ending the 16-year rule of nationalist former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.

According to Agence France-Presse, in the Hungarian parliamentary election held on April 12, Magyar's Tisza party secured more than a two-thirds absolute majority, defeating Orban's Fidesz party.

The European Union highly commended Magyar's assumption of office, believing it symbolizes the end of years of confrontation and repeated policy obstruction between Hungary and the EU.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated on social media platform X that Magyar's inauguration "brings renewed hope and promise in these challenging times."

Magyar's inauguration ceremony attracted tens of thousands of people who gathered in front of large screens around the Parliament, waving Hungarian and EU flags to watch the ceremony, followed by an all-night celebration.

Magyar pledged during his parliamentary oath: "I will not rule Hungary, I will serve my country."

He later addressed supporters outdoors, emphasizing that the country "belongs to every citizen... We will rebuild Hungary together."

According to Reuters, however, the 45-year-old new leader's honeymoon period may be short, as Hungary must secure billions of euros in frozen European Union (EU) funds within a limited time to revitalize its economy and support strained public finances.

Magyar stated: "The Hungarian people have given us a mission to end decades of wandering."

He added: "They have authorized us to open a new chapter in Hungarian history. Not just a change of government, but a change of the entire system, a fresh start." (Compiled by Tsai Chia-min) 1150510
