(Central News Agency reporter Shen Pei-yao, Taipei, 9th) Infant formula is again suspected of toxin contamination. Taiwan's Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stated today that following recent UK media reports about "New Zealand a2 Milk Company recalling 3 batches of infant formula sold in the United States," an investigation confirmed that the recalled product and related batches have "no" import inspection records and have not been imported into Taiwan.
Earlier this year, infant formula repeatedly raised quality concerns, shocking the global dairy industry. The "International Consumer Traffic Light" announcement by the Ministry of Health and Welfare's Food and Drug Administration yesterday stated that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a recall for a2 brand infant formula due to toxin contamination.
Hsu Chao-kai, head of the FDA's Food Division, told media today that after Reuters reported on May 5th that "New Zealand a2 Milk Company recalled 3 batches of infant formula sold in the United States," the FDA immediately checked border import conditions and confirmed that the recalled product and related batches had "no" application records for inspection and had not been imported into Taiwan.
Hsu Chao-kai said that according to the report, this New Zealand recall was specifically for the U.S. market. The reason for the recall was the detection of Cereulide toxin in the product. Currently, there have been no confirmed cases of infants falling ill due to these affected batches. The recall action was conducted by the manufacturer in cooperation with guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Products sold in other markets, such as Australia and New Zealand, have different formulations and are therefore not affected.
Furthermore, according to global business opportunity information from the Ministry of Economic Affairs' International Trade Administration, a2, an infant formula exporter, recalled three batches of infant formula in the United States totaling approximately 63,078 cans due to Cereulide toxin, with over 16,000 cans already sold to consumers. The company has not yet received any definite reports of infants falling ill or being injured.
The information also explains that Cereulide toxin is a heat-resistant toxin produced by certain strains of Bacillus cereus, which can cause nausea and vomiting. Symptoms typically appear within 30 minutes to 6 hours after ingestion. (Edited by Li Heng-shan) 1150509
