(Central News Agency Reporter Shen Ju-feng, Keelung, 9th) The Keelung City Swimming Pool, which reopened this year after equipment improvements, recently experienced an incident during a swimming competition where a student was injured when a diving platform detached during a dive. The city government stated today that the diving platform has been temporarily suspended, and the cause will be clarified to maintain user safety.
The Keelung City Swimming Pool has been in use for over 45 years, and its outdated equipment and leaks severely impacted user safety. The city government closed the facility for three months for renovation starting December 1 last year, adding a new diving platform, and reopened on March 1 this year.
Keelung City Councillor Chang Chih-hao of the Democratic Progressive Party pointed out today that he recently received a complaint from a student's parent. On April 28, during a swimming competition held at the Keelung City Swimming Pool, a student athlete was injured when a diving platform detached during a dive.
Chang Chih-hao said this was a serious oversight. To protect citizens' safety, he convened city officials and relevant departments for an on-site inspection on May 4, a day when the swimming pool was closed. The detached diving platform was still there, and city personnel and vendor representatives present all believed it was due to improper locking.
Chang Chih-hao believes that this case involves the safety of student athletes, which is of great concern to parents across the city, and he will continue to pursue the matter to clarify the responsibilities of relevant personnel.
The Keelung City Government Education Department responded that the swimming events of the Keelung City 115th Junior High and Elementary School Joint Sports Meet were held at the Keelung City Swimming Pool on April 28. On the morning of that day, 96 participants had used the diving platform in the junior high division competition; in the afternoon, a student participant diving from lane 4 using the diving platform suddenly had the platform detach, causing minor abrasions.
According to the Education Department, the day after the incident, the Municipal Stadium immediately invited the design unit and contractor for an on-site inspection. Regarding the cause of the sudden detachment, experts will be commissioned to conduct an on-site inspection from aspects such as structural safety and maintenance.
Furthermore, it is not ruled out that the incident could be caused by frequent dives by multiple people, or excessive stress due to overweight users, leading to metal fatigue or excessive load on the base.
The Education Department stated that the diving platform is only temporarily installed for competitions or athlete training and is removed during normal times. Before the cause is clarified, the diving platform will remain suspended to provide a safer sports environment for citizens and athletes. (Editor: Li Hsi-chang) 1150509
