(Central News Agency, Taipei, May 8) A large product tanker was attacked on May 4 near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel was marked 'CHINA OWNER & CREW' (Chinese owner and crew). China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated today that the attacked vessel is Marshall Islands-flagged, with Chinese crew members on board, and no casualties have been reported so far.

According to comprehensive reports from Hong Kong's Economic Daily and mainland China's Caixin.com on May 7, a large product tanker was attacked on May 4 off the coast of Al Jeer Port in the United Arab Emirates, near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel's deck caught fire, and it was marked 'CHINA OWNER & CREW'. Some informed shipowners stated that this was the first time a Chinese tanker had been attacked.

Separately, according to mainland China's The Paper, a foreign media outlet raised questions about this incident at the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs' regular press conference this afternoon, including 'What measures is China taking to ensure the safety of its vessels?'

In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated, 'According to the information currently available, the attacked vessel is Marshall Islands-flagged, with Chinese crew members on board. As of now, no casualties have been reported on the vessel.'

Lin Jian pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz is a strait used for international navigation. China expresses deep concern over the large number of vessels and crew members affected and stranded in the strait due to conflicts. China believes that restoring smooth passage through the strait as soon as possible and safeguarding the safety of civilian vessels and crew members is in the common interest of regional countries and the international community.

Lin Jian further stated that China calls on all parties to take concrete measures to prevent the escalation of the situation in the strait. China is willing to continue making efforts to promote a ceasefire, facilitate talks, and de-escalate the situation in the strait. (Edited by Chou Hui-ying / Chen Kai-yu) 1150508
