(Central News Agency reporter Huang Tzu-chiang, Kuala Lumpur, 8th) With the global semiconductor supply chain restructuring, Taiwan has in recent years accelerated its deployment in the Southeast Asian market. Ambassador Anne Hung, Representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, pointed out that Taiwan holds a global leading position in advanced chip manufacturing, while Malaysia plays a critical role in packaging, testing, and electronic manufacturing services. She emphasized that the supply chains of both sides are highly complementary.

The 3-day "Southeast Asia Semiconductor Exhibition" concluded yesterday, and Ambassador Anne Hung also attended the "2026 Taiwan-Southeast Asia Semiconductor Industry Exchange Meeting" during the exhibition. She stated that semiconductors have become the core of global technological and economic development, with artificial intelligence (AI), high-performance computing (HPC), 5G communications, electric vehicles, and smart manufacturing all highly dependent on semiconductor technology.

Ambassador Hung noted that her recent visit to Penang witnessed the continuous expansion of Taiwanese businesses' investments in Malaysia, demonstrating their confidence in the Malaysian market. She also called on Malaysia to quickly update its bilateral investment agreement (BIA), which has been in effect for over 30 years, to establish a more comprehensive investment protection environment to attract more Taiwanese investment and deepen high-tech industrial cooperation between Taiwan and Malaysia.

Chang Yuan-chih, head of the economic division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, said that Taiwan and Malaysia have highly complementary strengths in the semiconductor industry chain. Taiwan has technological advantages in IC design and wafer manufacturing, while Malaysia plays a key role in packaging and testing.

He believes that Taiwan and Malaysia have huge potential for cooperation in high-end chips, sensors, and control systems in the future.

Lin Chun-sheng, Executive Director of the Taiwan Electronic Equipment Manufacturing Association, stated that Malaysia is one of the world's important semiconductor exporters, holding a key position in global packaging and testing capacity. Taiwanese companies at the exhibition showcased advanced packaging, smart manufacturing, and digital transformation solutions, aiming to deepen Taiwan-Malaysia semiconductor cooperation.

In addition, Taiwanese semiconductor-related companies attending the event today also visited the Federation of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Malaysia to understand the investment and industrial environment in Malaysia. Chou Li-jung, Deputy General Manager of the Precision Machinery Research Development Center, expressed hope to integrate Taiwanese companies to participate in exhibitions together and expand into international markets.

Tsai Hsin-tien, President of the Federation of Taiwanese Chambers of Commerce in Malaysia, emphasized that Malaysia, with its electronic manufacturing and packaging and testing infrastructure, is gradually becoming an important base for Taiwan's semiconductor supply chain layout.

With the assistance of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, SEMI Taiwan, SEMI Southeast Asia, and the Malaysia Semiconductor Industry Association (MSIA) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU), hoping to further deepen Taiwan-Malaysia semiconductor industry exchanges.

Industry experts believe that with Malaysia's packaging and testing and electronic manufacturing foundation, coupled with Taiwan's advantages in chip design and advanced manufacturing, both sides are expected to further deepen supply chain cooperation and build a regional semiconductor ecosystem.
