(Central News Agency reporter Chen Rong-chen, Taipei, 8th) At the World Table Tennis Team Championships held in London, UK, the Taiwan men's team today relied on 24-year-old Lin Yun-ju to secure two points, defeating Sweden 3-2 and advancing to the semifinals. Lin Yun-ju said he hadn't thought about reaching the podium, and they will now face Japan, hoping to break the team's best-ever record.
The International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Table Tennis Team Championships saw the Taiwan men's team, based on the Nagoya Asian Games lineup, led by world No. 7 "Taiwan's top player" Lin Yun-ju, along with young talents Feng Yi-hsin, Kuo Kuan-hung, Hung Ching-kai, and Hsu Hsien-chia. In the quarterfinals, they fiercely battled Sweden for five points, ultimately winning 3-2, bravely advancing to the semifinals and securing at least a bronze medal.
Lin Yun-ju, known as the "Silent Assassin," first defeated world No. 2 Truls Moregard in the opening singles match, then in the decisive fifth point, he beat Anton Kallberg 3-0, single-handedly securing two points to help the Taiwan men's team reach the podium.
After the match, Lin Yun-ju said in an interview that the team's initial goal was to reach the quarterfinals, and they hadn't expected to win another medal. He felt their mindset was excellent in this match, especially maintaining stable performance at critical moments. He also praised everyone's fighting spirit and mutual encouragement, with teammates cheering each other on whether they were playing or not, creating a great overall atmosphere. "I'm very happy that everyone won together."
Lin Yun-ju had previously won a bronze medal at the World Table Tennis Team Championships with "Table Tennis Godfather" Chuang Chih-yuan and "Yuzu-kun" Kao Cheng-jui. After the Taiwan men's team completed its generational transition, they once again secured a medal, matching the team's best-ever record. They will now compete for a spot in the championship match against Japan, led by Tomokazu Harimoto. Lin Yun-ju said: "Now that we've secured a medal, we'll see if we have a chance to take another step forward." (Editor: Li Mingzong) 1150508
