(Central News Agency, Taipei, May 8) Taiwan will open imports of Paraguayan poultry meat. The Ministry of Agriculture today stated that Paraguay's chicken exports are limited, far below Taiwan's overall chicken demand, and it is expected to primarily create market competition and substitution effects with existing imported products, thus having a limited overall impact on the domestic industry.

President Lai Ching-te and Paraguayan President Santiago Peña Palacios (also translated as Benia) held a bilateral meeting and announced that Taiwan will formally open imports of Paraguayan poultry meat, hoping to further deepen bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

The Ministry of Agriculture stated this evening that Paraguay's annual chicken export volume has been about 10,000 tons in recent years, which is a significant difference compared to Taiwan's annual chicken consumption of about 880,000 tons. It assesses that the overall supply and demand and market impact on the domestic poultry industry will be limited.

The Ministry of Agriculture explained that in recent years, Taiwan's imported chicken products have mainly been frozen chicken thighs and wings, and almost all have been imported from the United States, with a very stable supply source and market structure.

The Ministry of Agriculture stated that Paraguay's annual poultry meat export volume is far below Taiwan's overall chicken demand. If Paraguayan frozen poultry meat is imported into Taiwan, it is predicted to create a market substitution effect among imported chicken source countries, and the overall impact on Taiwan's poultry industry will indeed be limited.

In addition, the Ministry of Agriculture pointed out that if imports are opened in the future, it will continue to monitor market supply and demand, balancing the development of the domestic poultry industry with the needs of the consumer market. (Editor: Wu Su-jou) 1150508
