(Central News Agency reporter Chang Jung-hsiang, Tainan, 8th) Wushantou Reservoir and Chianan Canal in Tainan City have a history of over a century. President Lai Ching-te today commemorated Yoichi Hatta, the designer and builder, at the reservoir. President Lai said that Wushantou Reservoir plays an intangible role, closely linking the sentiments of Taiwan and Japan.

President Lai, former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's wife Akie Abe, Yoichi Hatta's descendant Shuichi Hatta and his family, Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Chairman Mitsuaki Mita, Kanazawa City Mayor of Ishikawa Prefecture Takumi Murayama, Minister of Agriculture Chen Chun-chi, Tainan City Mayor Huang Wei-che, and others today commemorated Yoichi Hatta on the 84th anniversary of his passing at Wushantou Reservoir.

President Lai, on behalf of the nation, sincerely thanked Yoichi Hatta for building Wushantou Reservoir and Chianan Canal in Yunlin, Chiayi, and Tainan, leaving a precious legacy for Taiwan. President Lai pointed out that Yoichi Hatta came to Taiwan and Tainan after graduating from the University of Tokyo, dedicating his life to Taiwan. Everyone regards Yoichi Hatta as one of their own; "Yoichi Hatta is a native of Kanazawa City and Tainan City, he is Japanese and also Taiwanese, he is our family, we are all one family."

President Lai stated that Wushantou Reservoir and Chianan Canal have made great contributions, transforming 150,000 hectares of land into fertile fields, increasing farmers' harvests. Not only does it irrigate rice paddies, but it now also irrigates sophisticated agriculture and Phalaenopsis orchids, improving farmers' lives, allowing children to have time to study, and enabling Taiwanese society to continue to progress.

President Lai also introduced Wushantou Reservoir and Chianan Canal, saying that Wushantou Reservoir has a capacity of over 70 million metric tons, and the main irrigation channels of Chianan Canal are about 1,410 kilometers long. If small waterways are included, the total length is 8,810 kilometers, which can circle Taiwan more than 9 times. Taiwan's agricultural progress has enabled it to develop industrial and technological industries, and the world's most important semiconductor manufacturing companies also use water from Wushantou Reservoir.

President Lai stated that Wushantou Reservoir plays an intangible role, closely linking the sentiments of Taiwan and Japan. The water from the reservoir flows through farmland and agricultural land, and also into people's hearts. Beneficiaries remember the source of their blessings and sincerely thank Yoichi Hatta and Japan. This emotional link has led to Japan and Taiwan caring for, assisting, and supporting each other during natural disasters, making their relationship even better.

President Lai said that when Taiwan faces various international threats, Japan, from Shinzo Abe onwards, has been very supportive of Taiwan. Currently, Japan is the largest market for Taiwanese fruits, and Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi is also very concerned about Taiwan, emphasizing the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait when meeting with US President Donald Trump.

President Lai stated that the close ties between Taiwan and Japan are related to every aspect of Wushantou Reservoir, and the Taiwan-Japan relationship has been built over 100 years. (Editor: Hsieh Ya-chu) 1150508
