(Central News Agency reporter Huang Hsu-sheng, New Taipei, 8th) On the eve of International Nurses' Day on May 12, the three-shift nurse-to-patient ratio, a matter of national concern for nursing staff, has been officially legalized. The New Taipei City Government Department of Health and the New Taipei nursing community both expressed support, hoping that a better nursing environment will help provide good patient care and encourage more young people to enter the nursing profession.

The Legislative Yuan today, by adding Article 4 to Article 12 of the Medical Act, officially legalized the three-shift nurse-to-patient ratio. Chen Run-chiu, Director of the New Taipei City Government Department of Health, stated in an interview with the Central News Agency this evening that they fully support it, adding that many hospitals in New Taipei have already met the nurse-to-patient ratio in the past two years, and the legalization will further enhance a high-quality nursing environment.

The 14th New Taipei City Outstanding Nurses and Excellent Nursing Personnel Awards Ceremony was held at the city hall this afternoon. Wu Chiu-feng, Chairperson of the New Taipei City Nurses Association, stated in her speech that nurses care for patients in clinical, long-term care, teaching, and research fields, and hoped that the examples of the award recipients would inspire young nurses to join the profession.

Wu Chiu-feng said that although the number of nurses in New Taipei City increased this year, it is still far from the target, and the nurse-to-patient ratio is one of the key factors, also hoping for support from the medical community. Young nurses today are not unwilling to work hard, but the burden of multiple co-morbidities in the general environment increases the medical burden, and caring for the elderly by the elderly also increases the care burden and pressure on nurses.

Wu Chiu-feng, who has been in the profession for nearly 40 years, said that reducing the pressure on nursing staff can improve the quality of care. She said, "Without nurses, the country has no future," encouraging nurses to view their profession as a calling and leave meaningful value in their lives.

Mayor Hou Yu-ih, who presented the awards, said that nursing is a profession with "deep professionalism and warm care." He noted that the three-shift nurse-to-patient ratio has been discussed for a long time, and most medical institutions support it, as its legalization will reduce the burden on nurses and make the public healthier.

This year's recipient of the Outstanding Nursing "Special Contribution Award" is Li Chiu-kuei, Director of the Nursing Department at Shuang Ho Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare. She has dedicated herself to nursing for over 30 years, leading the transformation of smart nursing, creating a friendly workplace, and improving the retention rate of new personnel. Chen Yi-chun, a nurse at Cardinal Tien Hospital, who received the "Outstanding Nursing Award," has long been committed to extending palliative care from hospitals to families and institutions, increasing the proportion of dignified deaths to over 74%. The Department of Health said she diligently guarded the peaceful conclusion of lives. (Editor: Lin Shu-hui) 1150508
