(Central News Agency reporter Wu Shu-wei, Taipei, 8th) The Ministry of Foreign Affairs today stated that the 8th technical working group meeting for the 'Agreement between Taiwan and the Philippines on the Promotion of Fisheries Law Enforcement Cooperation' was held in Manila, Philippines, on the 6th. This meeting yielded fruitful results, with Taiwan and the Philippines agreeing to deepen the notification mechanism involving maritime fishery disputes, and engaging in full exchanges on issues such as joint fishery investment and direct employment of Filipino fishers on distant-water fishing vessels.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a press release tonight, explaining that the 8th Technical Working Group (TWG) meeting for the 'Agreement between Taiwan and the Philippines on the Promotion of Fisheries Law Enforcement Cooperation' was co-chaired by Representative Chou Min-kan from the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines and Representative Corazon A. Padiernos from the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that Huang Chao-chin, Political Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Wang Mao-cheng, Director-General of the Fisheries Agency, Drusila Esther E. Bayate, Undersecretary of the Philippine Department of Agriculture, and Isidro M. Velayo, Jr., Deputy Director of the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, as well as representatives from Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ocean Affairs Council Coast Guard Administration, attended the meeting.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned that the meeting yielded fruitful results. Taiwan and the Philippines shared the testing status since the establishment of the 'Fisheries Hotline Communication' last year and agreed to deepen the notification mechanism involving maritime fishery disputes. Both sides affirmed that sharing vessel information at Davao Port will help jointly combat Illegal, Unreported, Unregulated (IUU) fishing activities.
Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that both sides also fully exchanged views on issues such as joint fishery investment, direct employment of Filipino fishers on distant-water fishing vessels, aquaculture cooperation, and expanding the diversity of each other's fish gene banks.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out that Taiwan and the Philippines signed the 'Agreement on the Promotion of Fisheries Law Enforcement Cooperation' in 2015, and have held 8 working group meetings to date. This platform not only safeguards the rights and safety of fishers from both sides and enhances mutual trust but also promotes sustainable development and mutually beneficial cooperation in the fisheries of both countries.
