(Central News Agency reporter Tsai Chih-ming, Chiayi County, May 8th) The Lucao Story Troupe, established by the Lucao Township Office in Chiayi County, performed shadow puppetry today at the Lucao Folk Culture Academy. The shadow puppetry artists are cultural volunteers from the township, performing local story plays. The township office is also soliciting scripts with Lucao characteristics from external creators to pass on local culture.

Lucao Township Mayor Yan Peiyu told a Central News Agency reporter that the township office's shadow puppetry troupe has been established for over 10 years, and its performances are all based on stories and religious activities that occurred locally in Lucao. Today's performance, "Grandma with Hearing Loss," takes the hearing decline of the elderly as its main theme, depicting interesting incidents arising from misunderstandings among family members. The shadow puppetry troupe has also performed the story of "Lucao Ding Bantian Ciyun Temple Mochi Ma."

Yan Peiyu said that last year, the township office specifically solicited scripts for the troupe from external sources, widely inviting creators nationwide to create works based on Lucao's local cultural characteristics. After careful evaluation by judges, creator Luo Haowen's work "Passing Down Lucao - Fire Horse Festival" stood out and won the excellent award. A certificate and a NT$20,000 prize voucher were awarded at today's performance.

Luo Haowen stated that although he is not a local, he identifies with the township office's approach to promoting local culture. He specifically researched the "Fire Horse Festival," a major religious event held during the Lantern Festival at Yuanshan Temple in Lucao, Chiayi County, and compiled it into a script to participate in the competition. Through dramatic narration, he delicately portrays the spiritual essence of traditional folk customs passed down through generations, hoping that audiences watching the shadow puppetry performance will understand the "Fire Horse Festival."

Yan Peiyu stated that shadow puppetry is not only a precious traditional art but also an important vehicle for recording local stories and transmitting cultural memories. The township office will continue to deepen local arts and culture initiatives through platforms such as the Lucao Folk Culture Academy, integrating with diverse venues such as communities, schools, and long-term care centers, allowing traditional culture to enter the lives of different generations.
