(Central News Agency, London/Geneva, 8th, comprehensive foreign reports) A deadly Hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch cruise ship 'MV Hondius' has caused 3 deaths. The British government today announced a new suspected case involving a British citizen, making it the third British passenger case related to the 'MV Hondius'.
According to the BBC, the suspected patient is currently on the remote island of Tristan da Cunha in the South Atlantic. The 'MV Hondius' called at the island in mid-April.
Two other British passengers are confirmed Hantavirus cases. One was evacuated from the 'MV Hondius' to the Netherlands for treatment on the 6th and is currently in stable condition. The other was evacuated to South Africa last month and remains in intensive care.
In addition, a KLM Royal Dutch Airlines flight attendant was hospitalized in Amsterdam with suspected Hantavirus symptoms. The World Health Organization (WHO) today announced that the flight attendant's virus test results were negative.
AFP reported that the flight attendant reportedly had contact with an infected cruise passenger who was removed from a KLM flight and later died in South Africa.
A WHO spokesperson told AFP that they had received notification through the 'International Health Regulations' contact point, confirming the flight attendant's negative test results.
KLM stated on the 6th that the infected passenger was the wife of the first fatality in the 'MV Hondius' Hantavirus outbreak. She briefly boarded a flight from Johannesburg to the Netherlands on April 25th but was removed before the plane took off.
The Dutch woman died in a Johannesburg hospital on April 26th, and her Hantavirus test result was positive.
The Dutch-flagged 'MV Hondius' departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1st, with its original destination being the Republic of Cape Verde. However, the West African island nation refused to allow the cruise ship to dock. Three people have now died on the cruise ship. The Dutch woman is one of the three fatalities.
KLM stated in a statement: "Based on the passenger's physical condition at the time, the crew decided not to allow her to board. After the passenger left the aircraft, the flight immediately departed for the Netherlands."
