(Central News Agency reporter Liu Yu-ting, Prague, 8th) The Czech Senate opened to the public to commemorate the end of World War II, with one themed exhibition displaying various medals and gifts presented by Taiwan to representatives of the Senate, including the "First Class Medal of Congressional Diplomacy Honor," a Legislative Yuan commemorative gavel, a China Airlines aircraft model, and Traditional Chinese editions of Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal's books, witnessing the friendly relations between Taiwan and the Czech Republic in recent years.
The Czech Republic held commemorative events for Victory in Europe Day on the 8th, and the Senate was open to the public. Coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the Czech Senate's establishment, the Senate set up several themed exhibitions in its park introducing the history of the Senate, with one part focusing on the achievements of cooperation and mutual visits with Taiwan over the years.
The exhibition mentioned that the Senate has long been concerned with issues between global freedom and oppression, and through resolutions, official receptions, and parliamentary diplomatic actions, it continues to support human rights, democracy, and oppressed groups. In particular, it continues to pay attention to the developments in China and Belarus.
The Senate pointed out, "In the past five years, cooperation with countries like Taiwan and Ukraine, which are located near expansionist powers, has become particularly important, and this situation deeply resonates with the Czech Republic's own historical experience."
Among the display cases, several Taiwan-related exhibits were particularly eye-catching, including the "First Class Medal of Congressional Diplomacy Honor" awarded by then-Legislative Yuan President You Si-kun to Czech Senate President Miloš Vystrčil during his visit to Taiwan in 2020, a photo of Vystrčil's speech in the Legislative Yuan, and a China Airlines aircraft model.
The exhibition also displayed the "Special Grand Cordon of the Order of Brilliant Star" posthumously awarded by then-Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen to Jaroslav Kubera on September 3, 2020, in recognition of his outstanding contributions to deepening Taiwan-Czech relations. Vystrčil accepted this medal on his behalf at the time. This medal is now displayed next to the "Kubera Bench" in the first courtyard, becoming an important symbol of Taiwan-Czech democratic friendship.
The exhibition noted, "After the sudden passing of Senate President Kubera, Vystrčil took over his plan to visit Taiwan and completed the trip from late August to early September 2020. This was the first time a parliamentary speaker-level official from a post-communist European country officially visited Taiwan, carrying significant symbolic and political meaning."
In addition, the Senate also held a "Gift Exhibition" (Protokolární dary), publicly displaying diplomatic gifts presented by dignitaries and delegations from various countries over the years. The Senate stated that these gifts carry cultural, historical, and diplomatic significance, and also demonstrate the important role of the Czech Senate in international diplomacy.
The exhibition featured several diplomatic gifts from Taiwan, including a white circular porcelain plate with the calligraphic inscription "Peace and Prosperity" presented by You Si-kun during his visit to the Czech Republic in July 2022, and a Legislative Yuan "commemorative gavel" made of aluminum alloy.
Furthermore, there were commemorative gifts presented by China Airlines Chairman Kao Hsing-hwang during the ceremony for the launch of direct flights between Prague and Taipei on July 19, 2023; and diplomatic souvenirs presented by National Security Council Secretary-General Joseph Wu on June 14, 2024; as well as Traditional Chinese editions of Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal's "Closely Watched Trains," "Pearls of the Deep," and "I Served the King of England" published in Taiwan.
The Senate's "Gift Exhibition" witnesses the friendly relations between the Czech Republic and various countries, with the appearance of gifts from Taiwan highlighting the special significance of Taiwan-Czech relations in the European diplomatic landscape in recent years.
