(Central News Agency reporter Wang Yang-yu, Taipei, 8th) With frequent rat sightings recently in Taipei City, civic groups such as Taiwan Northern Society today reviewed the structural problems in the current Taipei City Government's rat control governance and proposed reform suggestions including waste collection, sewage maintenance, inter-agency coordination, epidemic prevention governance, and urban resilience, calling on the city government to seriously address the issue of a weakening public health defense line.

Taiwan Northern Society President Luo Jun-xuan, Development Center for Biotechnology Chairman Tu Hsing-che, and Taiwan Teachers' Alliance President Pan Wei-you, among others, held a press conference today at the Legislative Yuan titled "Rat Infestation Overflow, Governance Failure; Taipei City's Public Health Crisis and Urban Governance Review," to provide relevant explanations.

Luo Jun-xuan believes that improper disposal of garbage and food waste continuously provides food sources for rats. If the environment is full of garbage, rats can get food every day, and relying solely on rodenticides will hardly solve the problem.

Luo Jun-xuan pointed out that rat control cannot stop at superficial measures, nor can it rely solely on propaganda or creating new terms. Instead, it must return to the essence of public health governance, including waste collection, environmental cleanliness, market management, vector monitoring, and high-risk area treatment.

Luo Jun-xuan stated that the citizens who came forward today are not creating confrontation but sincerely hope the city becomes better. He called on the city government to face the problem, return to professionalism, actively deal with it, and let public health return to scientific governance instead of political rhetoric.

Tu Hsing-che emphasized that public health is non-partisan, and viruses do not distinguish between political parties. What is truly important is how to reduce risks and protect citizens' health. Epidemic prevention and vector control have several core principles, including speed, professionalism, and public participation. He hopes that the rat infestation and epidemic prevention issues will not devolve into political rhetoric, but should be addressed through rational, scientific, and public cooperation to jointly safeguard urban safety and citizens' health.
