(Taipei, May 8, CNA) Chinese media outlet Caixin.com reported that a large product oil tanker was attacked on May 4th near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, with the vessel marked "CHINA OWNER & CREW" at the time. Informed shipowners stated that this is the first time a Chinese oil tanker has been attacked.

According to comprehensive reports from Hong Kong media Economic Daily and Caixin.com on May 7th, the oil tanker was attacked off Al Jeer Port in the United Arab Emirates, at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, and its deck caught fire.

Informed shipowners stated that this was the first time a Chinese oil tanker had been attacked, making it "psychologically difficult to accept."

Reuters quoted maritime security sources as saying that the damaged Chinese vessel was the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker "JV Innovation," which had reported a deck fire to nearby vessels on May 4th.

The US military stated earlier that the US Central Command launched an operation on May 4th to support US President Trump's "Operation Freedom," aimed at "restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz." However, "Operation Freedom" was suspended one day later.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated during a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi in Beijing on May 6th that the international community shares a common concern for restoring normal safe passage in the Strait of Hormuz, and China hopes that the parties involved will "respond to the strong calls of the international community as soon as possible."
