According to comprehensive reports from Hong Kong's Economic Daily and Caixin.com on May 7, the oil tanker was attacked off Al Jeer Port in the United Arab Emirates, at the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz, and its deck caught fire.

An informed shipowner stated that this was the first time a Chinese oil tanker had been attacked, and it was "psychologically difficult to accept."

Reuters quoted maritime security sources as saying that the damaged Chinese vessel was the Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker "JV Innovation," which reported a deck fire to nearby vessels on May 4.
