(Central News Agency Sydney 8th Comprehensive Foreign Report) The Fijian government announced today that its cabinet has approved an economic and security treaty with Australia. Australia has recently been actively strengthening its relations with its Pacific neighbors to counter China's growing security presence in the region.
AFP reported that the Fijian government issued a statement on Facebook today, stating that the cabinet "has approved the 'Fiji-Australia Vuvale Union,' a treaty-level framework that will strengthen and formalize the long-standing partnership between Fiji and Australia." Vuvale means "family" in Fijian.
The statement pointed out that this treaty will deepen economic integration between the two countries and cover issues such as climate security, health, and infrastructure.
An Australian official stated that the subsequent procedures for the treaty still require approval from the Australian side.
Details of the treaty are expected to be announced only after the leaders of the two countries formally sign it.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong said in Suva, the capital of Fiji, on the 6th of this month that the treaty under negotiation between the two countries focuses on security, development, and people-to-people exchanges.
