(Central News Agency reporter Huang Yu-Ching, Pingtung County, 8th) Silin Elementary School in Chaozhou Township, Pingtung, whose original campus was old and posed safety concerns, has been rebuilt by the county government into a forest school at the foot of Dawu Mountain. The new school buildings, surrounding environmental beautification, and school access paths have been gradually completed over the past two years, with the inauguration ceremony for the new school buildings held today.

County Magistrate Chou Chun-Mi attended the ceremony and stated that Silin Elementary School was established in 1936. Due to the aging buildings and seismic resistance not meeting standards, to ensure campus safety, the county government applied to the Ministry of Education for funding from the "National Elementary and Junior High School Aging Campus Reconstruction Project" and combined it with self-funded contributions from the county government, investing a total of NT$121.76 million for reconstruction. The county government additionally injected NT$5.2 million for surrounding environmental improvements, comprehensively optimizing everything from classrooms to the campus environment.

Chou Chun-Mi said that the Silin Elementary School reconstruction project particularly emphasized a symbiotic relationship with the local environment, making the school no longer a closed learning space but one that can interact with the community and natural landscape. In recent years, the county government has promoted the optimization of campus environments, subsidizing 10 schools from 2020 to 2025 for the demolition and reconstruction of aging school buildings, and gradually promoting projects including playground renovation, old toilet refurbishment, and the construction of all-weather sports fields, providing a more comfortable and safe teaching environment for teachers and students.

According to a press release from the Pingtung County Government Education Department, the new campus design is centered on "forest, green tunnel, and Dawu Mountain," positioning the campus as a "forest entrance." The main school building is planned as a two-story structure, providing a total of 21 classrooms, including for kindergarten, regular classrooms, administrative offices, specialized classrooms, and a library, completed in June 2024. The overall surrounding beautification was completed in November last year, and the school access path constructed by the Chaozhou Township Office was also completed in March this year.

The Education Department mentioned that the school deliberately preserved the historically significant cement animal sculptures in the central courtyard and integrated them with the old trees and rich ecology of the campus. Among them, the "space under the trees" beneath the library is the most notable, simulating the form of tree trunks through a connecting corridor structure system, echoing the famous "Silin Green Tunnel," and transforming into a forest school at the foot of Dawu Mountain, allowing children to experience the dialogue between nature and architecture in their daily lives.
