TAIPEI (Central News Agency reporter Chung Jung-feng, May 7) — Taiwan's stock market, despite MediaTek (the third-largest by market value) being placed under disposition trading starting today, saw bellwether TSMC hit a new intraday high of NT$2345. With other heavyweights like Delta Electronics and ASE Technology Holding also rising, the Taiwan stock index briefly surpassed 42000 points, reaching an all-time high of 42156.06 points, up 1017.21 points. However, TSMC and other heavyweights pulled back slightly at the close, causing the index to lose the 42000-point mark.
The weighted index still set a new closing high of 41933.78 points, up 794.93 points (1.93%), with a transaction value of NT$1.194341 trillion. TSMC also set a new closing high of NT$2310.
The electronics index set a new closing high of 2722.61 points, up 2.21%. The OTC index, representing small and medium-sized stocks, also set a new closing high of 416.41 points, surging 1.49%.
Bellwether TSMC hit an all-time high of NT$2345 in early trading, up NT$95 (4.22%), contributing 755 points to the broader market index. Its market value peaked at NT$60.81 trillion, a new historical high. It closed at a new record high of NT$2310, up NT$60, contributing 477 points to the broader market, with a gain of 2.67% and a market value of NT$59.9 trillion, also setting a new record.
