(Central News Agency Reporter Zhao Minya Taipei 7th) The National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) today stated that it jointly held the "Taiwan-Germany Lithium Battery Cooperation Results (Phase 3) Exchange Seminar" with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMFTR) in Germany from the 5th to the 8th, Taiwan time. The seminar showcased recent cooperation achievements and outlined a bilateral advanced battery cooperation roadmap for 2026-2029, continuously deepening the strategic partnership between Taiwan and Germany in advanced battery fields.
The NSTC issued a press release stating that the "Taiwan-Germany Lithium Battery Cooperation Results (Phase 3) Exchange Seminar" was held in Dresden, Germany, bringing together project leaders and core research team members from both sides of the Taiwan-Germany battery cooperation projects from 2023 to 2026. Research topics covered key technologies such as high-energy lithium-ion batteries, high-voltage cathode materials, high-capacity and fast-charging anode materials, and high-safety electrolytes. Through results presentations and in-depth discussions, cross-disciplinary integration and technological breakthroughs were promoted.
Li Wang-lung, Director of the Department of International Cooperation and Science Education at the NSTC, stated in his opening remarks that the NSTC and the German BMFTR signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation in 2016. Since 2017, they have subsidized three Taiwan-Germany research teams to implement bilateral cooperation projects. Through close cooperation and exchange, the results have been outstanding, leading to the signing of the Taiwan-Germany Science and Technology Cooperation Agreement (STA) in 2023. Under this framework, cooperation research projects in fields such as semiconductors, hydrogen energy, and artificial intelligence have been successfully promoted.
Dr. Stefan Jung, representative of the German BMFTR, pointed out that the excellent achievements of both sides in automotive battery technology are a model of Taiwan-Germany scientific and technological cooperation. Not only has it substantially improved battery performance, but it has also promoted exchanges among young research talents. The German government will provide more financial support for the project.
The NSTC explained that the 2026-2029 (Phase 4) cooperation framework will focus on topics such as solid-state batteries, high-energy metal batteries, high-power lithium batteries, material recycling of waste batteries, and emerging battery types. In addition to continuing the advantages of high-energy lithium-ion batteries and high-safety energy storage, it will also incorporate advanced battery performance such as solid-state, high-energy metal anodes, and high-power, and emphasize material circulation and resource resilience.
The NSTC stated that the conference also planned exclusive exchange sessions for doctoral students and young scholars, and invited industry consultants and committee members to participate, strengthening the two-way connection and in-depth dialogue between academic research and industry practice, and enhancing the application potential and practical value of research results. This is not only an important milestone for Taiwan-Germany bilateral scientific research cooperation but will also become an important cornerstone for promoting the next stage of larger-scale and more influential international cooperation, comprehensively strengthening Taiwan's key position in the global scientific research network.
