(Central News Agency reporter Huang Li-chen, Taipei, 7th) Taipei police officers were conducting a checkpoint inspection in Zhongshan District last night when a car driver suddenly accelerated, rammed an officer, causing multiple abrasions, and fled despite officers firing 7 shots. Following a comprehensive pursuit by on-duty police, the drug-impaired driver, surnamed Wan, was apprehended in Taichung in the early hours of this morning.

Officers from the Taipei City Police Department's Security Police Brigade were conducting a checkpoint around Jiankuo North Road and Songjiang Road intersection in Zhongshan District at approximately 9 PM last night. They intercepted a suspicious vehicle and were directing the male driver to stop for inspection. The driver feigned cooperation, then suddenly accelerated and rammed the officer on duty, causing abrasions to the officer's hands and right knee.

Other officers present immediately fired 7 shots to stop the vehicle, but the driver still broke through the checkpoint and fled. An immediate alert was issued for all on-duty police to intercept and pursue.

Upon receiving the report, the local police precinct, Zhongshan Police Precinct, formed a special task force with the Criminal Investigation Division to track the suspect and notified the National Highway Police and Taichung City Police Department for assistance in interception and apprehension.

After reviewing surveillance footage and analyzing the vehicle's trajectory, police swiftly apprehended the driver, surnamed Wan, in Dongshi District, Taichung City, at approximately 3 AM this morning. The involved vehicle, with its license plates removed, was also seized. A rapid saliva drug test showed a positive reaction.

Wan, who has a record of fraud and obstruction of liberty, claimed that he was traveling north to collect money last night and fled the police checkpoint because he had ketamine in the car.

As there was still a passenger in the car at the time of the incident, it is understood that Wan dropped off his friend before returning to his home in Taichung. Police are currently continuing their investigation. Furthermore, the injured officer has been discharged after medical treatment and is in stable condition.

After questioning, Wan will be transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation on charges of obstructing official duties, assault, and violations of the Narcotics Hazard Prevention Act.

The police emphasized that they will not tolerate any illegal acts that endanger officers' safety or challenge public authority and will prosecute them according to the law. They will also continue to vigorously crack down on drunk driving, drug driving, and various major traffic violations, urging the public to abide by traffic laws and refuse to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
