(Central News Agency Reporter Chen Yu-ting Taipei 7th) Taipei City's first batch of 5 negative pressure smoking rooms were activated today. Mayor Chiang Wan-an stated that this is an important milestone for the city government in promoting a smoke-free city, and hopes that all sectors will provide suggestions so that the city government can quickly revise and adjust, gradually realizing the vision of a smoke-free city.

To promote a smoke-free city, the Taipei City Government has established 5 negative pressure smoking rooms in Ximen Commercial District, Zhongshan Linear Park, and Xingyi Parking Lot. Additionally, 63 green fence outdoor smoking areas have been added along Dunhua North and South Roads, Xinyi Road, 12 public outdoor parking lots, 8 administrative centers, and 12 demonstration villages. Various departments have also set up 50 outdoor smoking areas, all officially activated today.

Chiang Wan-an inspected the Ximen Commercial District and stated that this is the first negative pressure smoking room in Taiwan, representing an important milestone for Taipei City in promoting a smoke-free city. However, urban progress cannot stop, and he hopes that all sectors will provide suggestions so that the city government can quickly revise and adjust.

Chiang Wan-an mentioned that according to a public opinion poll by the Research, Development and Evaluation Commission, citizens highly affirm the trial implementation of "smoke-free environments" at the New Year's Street Market and Taipei Lantern Festival. As high as 96.2% of citizens support adopting the same management approach in large events or crowded public places, and 85.7% of the public support setting up outdoor smoking rooms in public spaces.

Chiang Wan-an said that Ximen Commercial District will be used as a demonstration point for promotion, and inspections will begin in June. He hopes that through diversion, smokers will be guided to designated smoking areas, and non-smokers walking on the street will be free from the harm of second-hand and third-hand smoke, gradually realizing the vision of a smoke-free city.

Huang Jian-hua, Director of the Taipei City Department of Health, explained that including the existing 65 smoking areas, there are currently 183 smoking areas and smoking rooms throughout the city. Citizens who wish to find them can enter the "TaipeiPASS" App and click on "Designated Smoking Area Map." In addition, Ximen Commercial District will be completely smoke-free from June 1, and Zhongshan Linear Park is already completely smoke-free. Various departments will jointly enforce tobacco hazard counseling and inspections. (Edited by: Guan Zhongwei) 1150507
