(Vatican City, May 7, Central News Agency) After weeks of strained relations between the Holy See and the White House, the US State Department announced today that the meeting between Pope Leo XIV and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio "highlights the solid bilateral relationship."

According to Agence France-Presse, Pope Leo XIV earlier discussed the situation in the Middle East with Rubio. US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott stated: "This meeting highlights the solid relationship between the United States and the Holy See, and their shared commitment to promoting peace and human dignity."

A US State Department official also told Agence France-Presse that the meeting between Pope Leo XIV and Rubio was "friendly and constructive."

According to Reuters, Rubio spent two and a half hours in the Vatican.
