(Central News Agency reporter Xie Junlin, Taipei, 7th) Prosecutor General Xing Taizhao of the Supreme Prosecutors Office's term expired today. The Ministry of Justice has received an official letter from the Presidential Office, appointing Chief Prosecutor Xu Sixiang of the Supreme Prosecutors Office as acting Prosecutor General from tomorrow, exercising relevant powers.

Xu Sixiang, 63, holds a master's degree from National Chung Hsing University's Graduate Institute of Law. He has served as chief prosecutor of the Kinmen, Hsinchu, Changhua, and New Taipei District Prosecutors Offices, chief prosecutor of the Taichung Branch of the High Prosecutors Office, and political deputy minister of the Ministry of Justice. He also served on secondment as director of the Political Warfare Department of the Coast Guard Administration and deputy director of the National Security Bureau.

The Presidential Office issued a press release on March 13 stating that the term of incumbent Prosecutor General Xing Taizhao would expire on May 7. President Lai Ching-te nominated Xu Sixiang as Prosecutor General in accordance with the Organic Act of the Courts and submitted it to the Legislative Yuan for the exercise of its consent right. However, the Legislative Yuan voted on this personnel consent right case on the 5th. With the Kuomintang and People First Party legislators casting dissenting votes, Xu Sixiang did not meet the consent threshold and therefore failed to pass. Xu Sixiang said that he did not try hard enough.

Ministry of Justice officials stated on the 5th that they respect the results of the Legislative Yuan's vote. Since the nomination of the Prosecutor General is within the President's authority, to maintain the normal operation of the Supreme Prosecutors Office and protect the rights and interests of the people, they will follow precedents and report to the Executive Yuan to relay to the President to appoint an acting Prosecutor General.

As Xing Taizhao's term expires today, to avoid a vacuum in the Supreme Prosecutors Office's operations, the Ministry of Justice today received an official letter from the Presidential Office, appointing Xu Sixiang as acting Prosecutor General from tomorrow, exercising relevant powers.

According to the Organic Act of the Courts, if the Prosecutor General's position becomes vacant or he is unable to perform his duties, the President shall re-nominate a candidate within three months, and the appointment shall be made with the consent of the Legislative Yuan. His term shall be recalculated for four years and he may not be reappointed. (Editor: Wu Surou) 1150507
