(Central News Agency reporter Chen Chih-chien, Taipei, 7th) Teacher turnover rates are high in remote areas. National Taipei University of Education and the non-profit organization TFT (Teach for Taiwan) are collaborating, and starting in May, they will recruit for Taiwan's first "practice-oriented" post-baccalaureate education credit program, assisting in retaining talent in remote areas.
NTUE, TFT, and the American teacher training institution Relay Graduate School of Education signed a memorandum of understanding today in Taipei and held a press conference, officially announcing the pilot of the "Practice-Oriented Teacher Training Post-Baccalaureate Education Credit Program for Remote Area Schools" in the 115th academic year. This program aligns with international trends, using an in-service credit program approach to enhance teachers' cultural sensitivity and inclusive adaptability, transforming academic theories into teaching practices.
The target students for the aforementioned credit program are substitute teachers already teaching in remote areas. They do not need to interrupt their teaching work but will take courses in a blended online and in-person format during weekends and winter/summer breaks. Each student will be assigned a coach to assist in applying theoretical knowledge to teaching practice and receiving feedback.
TFT CEO Shih Hui-wen stated that many teachers enter remote areas alone and find it very difficult to pursue further education without sufficient support. The international trend is to blur the lines between pre-service and in-service training. The post-baccalaureate program, through its practice-oriented model, helps remote area teachers more quickly transform acquired knowledge into teaching competence when facing complex challenges, thereby accumulating successful experiences and establishing stable roots in remote areas.
NTUE President Chen Ching-ho hopes that through this tripartite cooperation, a collaborative partnership between universities and civil society will be established, integrating academic expertise with frontline educational practical energy, responding to the needs of remote areas, and allowing teachers willing to stay in remote areas to continue receiving stable and effective professional support. He also hopes that this innovative practice can become a model for teacher training in Taiwan.
The "Practice-Oriented Teacher Training Post-Baccalaureate Education Credit Program for Remote Area Schools" is expected to recruit 48 students, with an additional 3 spots for indigenous people. Admission requirements can be found on the official websites of NTUE and TFT. (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150507
