Central News Agency (Reporter Wang Shufen, Taipei 7th) - The Executive Yuan Consumer Protection Department announced today that national consumer complaints and mediation cases totaled 83,442 in the 114 fiscal year, with initial complaints reaching 65,991. Among these, fitness-related consumer disputes were the most numerous, with 5,516 cases, an increase of approximately 1.8 times compared to the 113 fiscal year.

The Consumer Protection Department's statistics show that initial complaint cases totaled 65,991 in the 114 fiscal year, with an additional 83,442 cases including those that failed mediation and entered secondary mediation.

Based on initial complaint cases, the top five complaint types and their numbers were: "Fitness" with 5,516 cases, "Online Games" with 3,771 cases, "Food" with 3,772 cases, "Transportation" with 3,645 cases, and "Apparel, Leather Goods, and Footwear" with 2,900 cases, accounting for approximately 30% of all initial complaints.

The Consumer Protection Department explained that the number of fitness consumer disputes in the 114 fiscal year significantly increased by approximately 185% compared to 1,937 cases in the 113 fiscal year, mainly due to the unexpected closure of True Yoga Fitness, which led to a surge of 3,332 complaint cases.

The Consumer Protection Department advises consumers to carefully review contract terms before signing fitness contracts and to opt for monthly payments to avoid high upfront fees. Additionally, consumers should check if businesses provide performance guarantees and prioritize credit card payments. If a business ceases operations, consumers can request performance guarantee payments from financial institutions (e.g., applying for trust funds) and dispute credit card charges with their issuing bank.

The Consumer Protection Department pointed out that among the top five consumer disputes, "Online Games," "Food," "Transportation," and "Apparel, Leather Goods, and Footwear" have been in the top five for two consecutive years. Except for "Food" cases, which increased by 6.34% compared to the previous year, the other three categories saw a decrease in cases, with "Online Games" showing the most significant reduction at 15.51%.
