Press Release Information Title: Liu Shih-fang: Rat Infestation Not Due to Urban Renewal; Strict Supervision of Construction Site Management

(Central News Agency reporter Kao Hua-chien, Taipei 7th) Frequent rat sightings in Taipei streets have drawn attention, with some questioning if it's related to intensive urban renewal demolitions lacking rat control measures. Interior Minister Liu Shih-fang stated today that rat infestations are not due to urban renewal, urging not to confuse cause and effect. The National Land Management Agency will strictly supervise urban renewal and other construction site management, and will include rat control.

Recently, citizens have frequently reported rat sightings in Taipei streets. Some believe this might be related to intensive urban renewal, demolition of old buildings, and a lack of rat prevention and control measures, leading rats to migrate to surrounding communities. The Taipei City Government has announced that urban renewal construction sites must submit rat control reports during the commencement and construction periods.

Today, the Ministry of the Interior held a post-meeting press conference for its departmental meeting. Regarding the issue of urban renewal and rat infestations, Deputy Minister of the Interior Tung Chien-hung stated that the Urban Renewal Act has been implemented for a long time, and "urban renewal and rats are unrelated; please do not make a false connection."

Deputy Minister Tung Chien-hung pointed out that if rats or related infectious diseases occur in major cities worldwide, the Department of Health, in coordination with environmental protection agencies, handles the frontline response. The urban planning department is a coordinating department, so the primary responsibilities must be clear. The appearance of rats is not related to urban renewal, as "Taiwan has not just started urban renewal today."

Liu Shih-fang said that safety and health management work required for urban renewal or any construction site management is the same, including wearing safety helmets and wastewater treatment. Therefore, the National Land Management Agency will strictly supervise urban renewal and other construction site management, and will include rat control. She also called for not confusing cause and effect, stating that rat infestations are not due to urban renewal, and that such claims are taking things out of context.
