Central News Agency (Reporter Lin Chiao-lien, Kaohsiung, 7th) Phoenix cakes sold at a well-known fresh food supermarket in Kaohsiung were found by a consumer to have "dual-labeled" expiration dates, suspected of being altered. The operator today removed over a hundred boxes of products, and the health bureau confirmed the dual labeling during an on-site inspection. The case will be referred to the district prosecutor's office for investigation after investigating the manufacturer.
A consumer posted on the social media platform Threads, stating that the phoenix cakes she bought at a supermarket had two expiration date labels, one for May 7, 2026, and another for June 19, 2026. The consumer said that she bought 10 boxes and got 2 free of the same product at the store. Except for the box with dual labels, the other boxes had obvious traces of labels being torn off, suspecting the store of fraud.
After receiving the report today, the health bureau dispatched personnel for investigation. Upon learning of the situation, the operator cleared and removed 250 boxes of phoenix cake products from two branches and offered refunds to consumers for products with concerns.
The inspectors checked the removed products and found one box with dual expiration dates (May 7, 2026, and June 19, 2026). The operator told the inspectors that the product was manufactured and labeled by a contract manufacturer, and the store only displayed and sold it.
The health bureau stated that it will further clarify whether it involves false labeling to obtain illegal profits and violates Article 339, Paragraph 1 of the Criminal Code. The entire case will be referred to the district prosecutor's office for investigation.
The operator stated that to protect consumer rights and food safety, they immediately took the initiative to remove all phoenix cake products from shelves, and at the same time, voluntarily reported to the health bureau and fully cooperated with relevant units for investigation and confirmation. They also expressed sincere apologies for causing consumer concerns. (Editor: Hsieh Ya-chu) 1150507
