Washington, May 7 (CNA) – Despite a new wave of Israeli airstrikes on the heart of Lebanon's capital, Beirut, US officials today stated that Lebanon and Israel will hold a new round of peace talks in Washington on May 14-15.

Agence France-Presse reported that Israel launched an airstrike late yesterday, killing a senior Hezbollah commander. Israel stated that despite the ceasefire agreement being implemented in Lebanon, it would continue to strike the Iran-backed militant organization.

The talks between Israel and Lebanon next week will be their third round. Israel and Lebanon have not had direct dialogue for decades, and to date, have no diplomatic relations.

"Lebanon and Israel will hold talks in Washington next Thursday and Friday," a US State Department official said on condition of anonymity.

According to Lebanese authorities, Israeli airstrikes on Lebanon have caused over 2,700 deaths since March 2, including dozens killed after the ceasefire was announced.

The previous round of talks was held on April 23, where both sides met with US President Trump at the White House. Trump announced an extension of the ceasefire for three weeks.

Trump also stated that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to hold a historic meeting with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun during the ceasefire period.

However, Aoun stated on April 4 that the time was not yet ripe, emphasizing that the two countries must first reach a security agreement before a meeting could take place.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said at a press conference on May 5, "There is no problem between the Lebanese government and the Israeli government"; the crux of the matter lies with Hezbollah.

Rubio stated: "Overall, I think a peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon is entirely achievable, and it should be." (Compiler: Qu Xiangping) 1150508
