(Central News Agency reporter Wu Chia-hao, Taipei, 7th) Meta Platforms, Inc., referencing movie rating systems and parental feedback, is rolling out age-appropriate content classification mechanisms for Instagram globally and in Taiwan. These will be applied by default to accounts of users under 18, ensuring that the content they view meets the 13+ standard in movie ratings, and they will be unable to view content unsuitable for minors. Parental consent will be required to change these settings.

In addition, to comply with the platform's age requirements, Meta is actively developing advanced AI (artificial intelligence) age detection technology, including the introduction of a new "visual analysis technology" to more accurately identify and remove Facebook and Instagram accounts that do not meet the 13-year-old age threshold.

Meta issued a press release today explaining that the original intention of designing teen accounts was to protect teenagers from inappropriate content. Instagram, referencing familiar movie rating systems and parents' desire to better understand the types of content their children view, has reviewed and revised its platform's "age-appropriate guidelines" and will hide more potentially unsuitable content for teenagers.

Meta pointed out that Instagram has long hidden or prohibited the recommendation of adult content to teenagers, such as sexually suggestive content, gore and violence, disturbing images, and the sale of tobacco or alcohol. Now, Instagram is further strengthening restrictions, including actively hiding or not recommending posts that include vulgar language, risky stunts, and content that may induce harmful behaviors, such as displaying cannabis paraphernalia.

Instagram also provides a "Restricted Content" setting, offering the strictest filtering protection for teen accounts, and simultaneously disabling the ability for teenagers to view, reply to, or receive comments on posts. These options will provide parents with more control.

In addition to rolling out these new content settings for Instagram teen accounts, Meta has also begun to introduce them to teen accounts on Facebook and Messenger globally. Teen communities on Facebook and Messenger in Taiwan will have the updated "13+ content settings" applied by default starting this week, while the "Restricted Content" setting will be rolled out later this year.

As Meta requires a minimum registration age of 13 for Facebook and Instagram, to implement relevant regulations and protect community safety, Meta is introducing advanced AI detection technology. This analyzes textual context clues in personal profiles, such as birthday posts or education information, to determine whether account holders meet the 13+ requirement. The detection scope is also being extended to Instagram Reels short videos, Instagram Live broadcasts, and Facebook groups.

Furthermore, a new "visual analysis" technology is being added as an auxiliary detection method. This AI, which does not involve facial recognition technology, scans the overall visual features in images, such as body shape or bone structure, to estimate age. If the system determines that an account is suspected of not meeting the age threshold, the account will be temporarily disabled. If further age verification cannot be provided, the account will be permanently deleted. (Editor: Yang Lan-hsuan)1150507
