(Central News Agency reporter Huang Li-yun, Taipei, May 7) To evade capture, drug manufacturer Wu and his assistant Guo rented two tin-roofed houses in rural Tainan City and near fishing ponds in Kaohsiung City last year to set up drug manufacturing plants. They extracted approximately NT$20 million worth of amphetamines. The Criminal Investigation Bureau traced them and arrested 4 suspects for prosecution, with the Southern Prosecutors' Office indicting them in February.

The Criminal Investigation Bureau held a press conference this afternoon announcing the case had been solved. Chen Yen-yu, captain of the third investigation team of the Criminal Investigation Bureau, stated that last year, through big data analysis and long-term surveillance, it was discovered that 30-year-old drug manufacturer Wu, residing in Tainan City, and 20-year-old assistant Guo were leading a drug manufacturing group.

To avoid attracting attention, Wu and his associates successively chose a tin-roofed house in the rural area of Annan District, Tainan City in March last year, and then rented another tin-roofed house near fishing ponds in Hunei District, Kaohsiung City in July and August of the same year to establish drug manufacturing plants.

At the same time, 40-year-old electrician Su assisted in installing drug manufacturing equipment in the plants, while Wu's wife, Wei, was responsible for purchasing and transporting drug manufacturing tools.

According to the investigation, Wu and his associates first extracted ephedrine and pseudoephedrine from purchased cold medicine tablets and capsules at the Tainan location. They then used related items for acidification treatment at a riverbed in Pingtung County, and finally transported them to the Kaohsiung location to refine them into finished amphetamines.

The entire case was reported to the Tainan District Prosecutors' Office for command and investigation, and a special task force was jointly formed with relevant units from Tainan City and Kaohsiung City for investigation.

After long-term investigation and when the time was ripe, the special task force deployed police forces to Tainan City and Kaohsiung City at the end of October last year to launch an assault and arrest operation, successfully dismantling a Class 2 drug (methamphetamine) manufacturing plant.

At the scene, a total of 71.1051 kilograms gross weight of Class 2 methamphetamine finished product, 46.04 kilograms gross weight of Class 2 methamphetamine semi-finished liquid, 63.34 grams gross weight of pseudoephedrine finished product, and a batch of drug manufacturing raw materials and equipment, with a market value of approximately NT$20 million, were seized as evidence.

After questioning, Wu and the other four suspects were transferred to the Southern Prosecutors' Office for investigation on charges of violating the Drug Hazard Prevention Act. The court ordered Wu and Guo to be detained incommunicado, and the Southern Prosecutors' Office indicted them in February. (Editor: Hsieh Ya-chu) 1150507
